I'd go for an i5.

Got an i5 2500K at 4.2 and my friend has a i7-920 at 4.2. You get about the same performance on most games, but if your going to upgrade get a Sandy Bridge.

A crossfire setup is part of the new system I would like to build somewhere in 2012. But with my current system it's out of the question.

Right now I'm gravitating most towards the Q9550. With my Xig 1283 I should be able to get it at least to 3.4/3.5 with relative ease. It would set me back about €180, 190. And I should be able to sell my E8400 for €80. So it would only set me back 100. Worth it?

Just wait until Bulldozer/ Ivy bridge. Prices will drop, and performance should be massively improved.

You should be able to do 3.8GHz pretty easy with that P5Q, that cooler and a Q9550. If you buy it, just head over to the P5Q Pro/Pro Turbo club and I'll post you a overclock template.

Certain games will benefit quite a bit, others won't at all. I have an E8400 at work and Q9550 at home. Depends what you play but if you have a quad you won't worry.

I'd have a quad for sure on your main rig.

Sorry to update this old thread, but it is my thread.
Someone offered me a fantastic deal on a year old e0 Q9650 so I took it.
Just installed it today and I'm busy overclocking it.
So far I've gotten it nice and stable at 3.8ghz with the voltage set to 1.225v which surprised me a lot, seeing as how my E8400 needed about 1.265 just to reach 3.6.
At this voltage even linpack can't push this cpu beyond 62c.
there's probably enough room to push it to 4ghz, but I have to wonder what's the point? I couldn't even tell the difference between 3.6 and 4ghz on my E8400 performance wise. I think 3.8 will do me fine, unless someone can post a compelling reason to push it to 4.

It's all up to you. I would want 4.0.
