555 to unlock to x4

Thread Starter
Hi there

I want to buy an AMD Phenom x2 555be from ebay and want to see if i can unlock it to a 955 phenom x4. I have some questions though..

1. is this 555 from ebay the black edition?
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/AMD-PHENOM-II-...item2eb41ebd8a

2. Is it 95w processor? my motherboard only supports up to 95w. check my sig for mobo.

3. what's the chances of it actually being unlockable?

1. It would appear so, I'm not aware of their being a none BE of the Phenom II 555.

2. It's actually got an 80w TDP however unlocking it would raise the TDP over 95w. A normal phenom II x4 has a TDP of 125w so unlocking would raise it to 125w TDP atleast. You wouldn't be able to run an unlocked Phenom II on that motherboard.

3. I'm not sure on the chances of it actually unlocking but as I said, you wouldn't be able to run it unlocked on that board anyway.

Your board might blow up because that board pretty much sucks, so dont unlock. The chances seem to be pretty high tho.

If I were you I'd sell the Athlon 245 + ASRock board as a combo and pick up a good 790 or 890 series board that is known to unlock cores.

Do not unlock on this board because of the weak 2+1/3 phase mobo.
The Phenom II x2 is 80W stock and will consume 125W when unlocked.

Invest with a new board with at least a quality/cooled 4+1 phase, better yet ~8+2

Rememder guys that not all mobo are made equal. But they are right about a high possiblity that the mobo may blow up. You can take your chances and try it. I have a Biostar A780L3G that has a 3+1 / 4 phase power that works fine with a 1090T(125 watts) at stock speed. But I took a chances with it when I ran prime95 for 6 hours.
