Do I actually need case-fans?

Hey guys,

I'm currently having a 10+ year old, standart ATx case without any fans. I just got side, top and some of the front open and it seems like to have more then enough cooling.

I'm running an overclocked PhenomII x3 720 with Contac29 on and a 6950 with stock cooler with a room temperature of 20+ celsius.

CPU is 35 on idle and 43 on heavy usage whereas the modded and overclocked 6950 doesn't get over 79 under burn, and is usually around 73 during gaming.

Now those are fairly average values, even for those 100+$ cased people. Which got me wondering, if we really need a space-ship cases for cooling? It would help with the noise isolation a lot, but meanwhile there would be few more fans spinning, which could even the total noise output.

What do you guys think about it?

They wouldn't hurt to have, buy some cheap ones and your temps will drop further

It's always good to have some airflow in the case, might drop your temps a few degrees.
if you don't need excess fans then don't complicate matters. it's just more noise.

you could do some ducting if you want particular areas cooled with the minimal airflow.
you could add one or two just to see if there's benefit if it bothers you.

although my suggestions need to be taken with a grain of salt since... y'know... I have about 12 undervolted 120mm fans in total... redface.gif

Yea just a few case fans couldn't hurt, but would def help. So keep an eye out for some good deals (ncix has great weekly sales). But just make sure that if you like your tower quiet, I assume it is with no case fans, and your tower is close to you when your on the PC, you might want to look into quiet fans, otherwise anything will help with the temps.

Thanks for the reply-flow guys!

But the real thing is actually whether spending money on a new case or not. Because my current case won't support and fans, except a small fan on the rear.

there's always modding devil-smiley-019.gif
my case only supported 2 fans when I first got it

here's a quick, although fairly ghetto test to see if extra air helps your system:
take the side-/top-/whatever-panel off, then (optional) take a big box-fan and point it at it.

losing the panel(s) messes up the flow, but if temps go down markedly for the short-term then it's a sign a little more air could help.

I went from a case with no fans to my Centurion (back then it had only the 2 standard fans) and temps dropped about 15C for the GPU IIRC. I wouldn't run a gaming PC in a case with no fans.

By now I have 2x 140mm and 4x 120mm, all being controlled by the motherboard to make them silent when idle. If I hold a piece of paper (standard A4) in front of my case, it gets sucked in and is held in place.

Guess I have to get rid of the last piece remaining from my system made at 99' ;-)

My concern is rather noise then cooling, because as the numbers show, I got no problem at all with the tempertures, which made me think all those case-fever is more or less marketeting tricks.

I've found my old stock CPU fan and manually played with it at various places.

Flowing fresh air into the CPU fan granted very good performance.

On the other hand, no matter where I've put the manual-fan, the reference design 6950 showed ABSOLUTELY no change at all, wheter on temp or fan speed. Which I find kinda weird..
Any opinions?
