Faulty GTX 460?

Thread Starter
Hi guys,

The other day my pc just unexpectedly shut down, and when i tried to power it back up it didn't power on,

When I press the power button nothing happens, but the green light is on, on the motherboard.

At first I thought it was my power supply had gone but when i remove the two 6 pin connectors from the card the system powers on.. also I've tried another card that dosent use the 6pin connectors (geforce 210) and that works fine.

I also tried it with another power supply but the problem persists, this power supply is only 250w though... so im unsure weather it could power the card..

I've tried all the obvious things but to no success, any help will be greatly appreciated. The card is a GTX 460 - 768 MB made by Point of View. The Card itself looks new with no signs what so ever of burning components

Thanks in advance Ryan.

You're using a GTX460 with 250W PSU??? Yeah, THAT will not be able to provide enough juice to the 460 and is probably some off-brand as well. A replacement there is recommended.

Thanks for the reply,

Yeah, its just it has powered my 8800 before and i thought their more power hungry.

When you say replacement was that for the card or PSU?

He means the PSU. The GTX 460 uses more than the 8800.

Exactly.

Check out G3D's power charts with a 460 installed. http://www.guru3d.com/article/geforce-gtx-460-review/13

Their system may pull a bit more than yours due to a hungrier CPU, but not that much that I would trust a 250W off-brand PSU to power your rig.

EDIT: If you want something that's cheap and will work well, the CX430 isn't a bad option (I mean, it's only $25 after MIR). If you want to do SLI in the future however, you should look to a PSU with in the >550W range.

Sorry no I was using a 700w to power it originally. I just tried the 250W to see if my original power supply was not giving out enough power, though i didnt expect that to work either..

So do you recon it could be my PSU thats just messed up so it can't power the card anymore or do you think my cards gone?

Ohhhhh. Well, I see in your sig rig that it is an Atrix. And from what I read here and here, Atrix PSUs are junk... so it could still be the PSU. However, it could also be the 460. Try the 460 in another system if you have one.

TBH, though, I'd put my suspicions on the PSU more than the GPU.

I hope so, Ive not had the card long and i don't think I'm covered under warranty because i got it off eBay.

Thanks for the help anyway
