Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 AHCI issues

Thread Starter
Has anyone here had issues where Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 hard drives don't seem to play nicely in AHCI? I've got a P55M-UD2 I'm trying to get set up and I'd like to use AHCI mode. I've tested with a Samsung 750 gig, a Hitachi 1 TB, and a Barracuda 2 TB hard drive and they all detect - BING! - that fast in AHCI mode.

But when I try to have the board detect my Barracuda 7200.12 1 TB, it just sits there and sits there and sits there. If I switch to IDE mode, it's fine, but the Seagate firmware updater had problems running on that. Luckily my E6700 box worked fine in updating that Barracuda, but even with the NEW firmware (CH46, if memory serves; the label on the drive is CC38), no go.

I've got another CC38 a CC32 Barracuda I'm going to test out in a few moments to see if it's that drive or if it's a common issue to the Barracudas.

If anyone can comment on this - be it relating a similar issue or the workaround they employed - please do so.

(Last minute note - There is no newer BIOS than the F11 for my motherboard, and I have the latest.)

This thread here describes the exact same issue. Appears that drive has AHCI issues for some random reason. I'll keep lookin.

EDIT: Yea this drive is not lookin good with AHCI:

Huh, interesting. Incidentally the other drive I tested was a CC32, not CC38, but it detected just fine. I haven't tried a firmware update on that one yet since Seagate's partition detector said there was something funny about the partitions themselves.

Oddly, the drive which seems to have AHCI problems worked fine in my Thermaltake BlacX SATA to USB, so what I will probably end up doing is after I get everything installed and set up on my Core i5 system the way I like it, I'll back up everything off that dodgy-ish Barracuda and retire it to my roommate's computer, which was set up with native IDE mode turned on to make life easy.

EDIT: According to the last post here, hot-plugging the drive into a SATA port set into AHCI mode will also work. I might get an eSATA version of the Thermaltake BlacX and try that hot-plug trick since it'll make the data transfer go a lot faster.

EDIT 2: This is kind of annoying, since I've sworn by Barracudas for a long time now, but if Seagates are going to have these kind of random issues it looks like I'll be buying Hitachi or Samsung drives from now on.
