Twin Frozr II fan horrible noise

Thread Starter
Hey I posted here because my problem is cooler fan related. I bought my MSI 560Ti TFII about 2 mouths ago. This was my first MSI hardware, I dont say im disappointed because if Im right the fans are not MSI made. The problem started a few days ago when starting PC I heard a click noise, I thought it was my HDD, recently installed an older one so I told to myself its nothing. Today I power on my PC click noise followed by a loud grinding noise. I knew it was a fan, I check and my right fan on the TFII was blocked. I dont want my card replaced because that would take weeks (from experience) so I took of the fan to clean it. Its back side got the usual sticker but under it there's no access to the bearing. The fan is factory sealed and no way to get to the shaft for cleaning. Anyone know if I take of that black plastic cork like seal if its the usual bearing fan mechanism, so I wont damage anything. I can make a new rubber seal after cleaning to replace the plastic one. I forgot to take photo and found none without the cooler.

Thanks in advance!

If it's making a clicking noise then I highly doubt the issue is dust. It sounds to me like either a wire is contacting the fan blades, or the motor or bearing assembly of the fan is kaput. Quite frankly, I don't think you have a choice but to RMA. Clean it first, of course, to make sure - compressed air will do wonders - but I wouldn't dismantle anything.

It could be a lack of luberication on your bearings too. Is it ballbearing, or sleeve bearing?
If its sleeve bearing, you can relube it by disassembling the fan(ill get into this later) and simply putting new oil in, Id recommend engine oil, or electric motor oil, like for engine oil, 5W30. Now to disassemble the fan:
1. peel back the back label to expose the hole where the plastic snap ring is
2. sometimes theres a rubber plug in there to prevent dust, remove it by carefully using a screwdriver or razor blade
3. VERY VERY carefully remove the plastic snap ring I mentioned earlier, these LOVE to fly, so PREVENT that at ALL costs, use a screwdriver or razor blade very carefully, and then keep it in a safe plac where it wont get lost.
4. remove the fan blade/motor magnet assembly
5. relube using either 5W30 engine oil, or even sewing machine oil.
6. reassemble fan blade into the fan's frame
7. VERY VERY carefully replace that plastic snap ring, they also LOVE to fly upon installation .
8. replace rubber plug(if it has one), and the fans motor label.
9. its ready for work once again!

If its a ballbearing fan, and it has UNSEALED ball bearings, I have a guide here in the air cooling forum that goes into re-lubing these kind of bearings.

Hey
thanks for the detailed procedure, ive done this numerous times. Thing is TFII fans come with a plastic plug which is unmovable, glue sealed. I'd have to use a tool to chisel it out. Ever seen one like this? Ill take it of later and post a photo.

This is the fan, anyone know where can you buy one? I dont think they will sell 2 pieces if I contact them. Might have to RMA ((
Anyone else had problem with TFII? I say its poor quality...

Your RMA may be denied if they see you've tampered with the card. That is a big reason why I suggested you leave it alone... Fans just go bad sometimes.

My suggestion for the future is for you to have a backup graphics card. I have an old 8600GTS that I used when my 4870X2 needed to be RMAed, for example. Just something inexpensive to get you by. I realize that may not be an option if you don't have a lot of money, but I suggest saving up for it.

Getting an extra card and RMA'ing the faulty card back to MSi is definitely the course of action that you should take.

I quote your post because I sent my card in to EVGA for step up and have been two weeks without my PC. I should have thought of getting a spare card.

Definitely take a trip to a local Microcenter if you have one and get the cheapest card that will play the games that you want to play and keep it as a backup in case this happens.

OP: You might even be able to complain to MSi and see if they can cross ship you a replacement first and you send yours in after you receive the replacement. Some manufacturers will do this, especially when the card went bad in two months.

Raise hell, professionally, and see where you get.

Today I called the reseller where I got the card from and they were surprisingly kind, they even offered transport, they are going to pick it up after filling the required forms. So yeah I'll RMA my MSI.

Advice: Dont buy Twin Frozr II cooled cards with Power Logic fans on it. They are hard to find if your warranty is off.

Thanks all for help!

Just arrived, my ASUS DCU II. Funny thing is after one of the fans went away the card died. They said it was a memory problem, my fist MSI hardware and probably the last one. Too bad was a good card while it lasted.
