Need a router capable of streaming HD movies wirelessly

So I have my HTPC built, and was wondering if it's possible to stream 1080p rips from my main PC to my HTPC wirelessly. Is there a router you guys would recommend to do so? I know N is 300mbps, but should I try for a dual band? Don't know if that's even enough anyways..

Let me know what you guys think smile.gif

I just ordered this one because I want to be able to do the same thing. Haven't received it yet so can't tell you how capable it is, but I think it has some of the best speeds you can find.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833124388&Tpk=e3000

I can let you know in a few days after I receive it and get it set up.

Dual band N is 300, just N is 150. depending on the signal strength you should be able to.

Incorrect.
'Dual band' operates on the 5 Ghz and 2.4 Ghz spectrums.
To obtain '300 mbps' you still need a MIMO configuration at either frequency.

Any router should do, you aren't actually using the routing capabilities for wireless clients since they are on your LAN.

so why is there n 150 and n 300? Thats the way i understood it a few years ago when I bought a n 150 router since i wanted wifi but it wasn't a huge priority. I upgraded to a dual band n running 300 now.

There are also routers with 3x MIMO for '450 mbps N' but there aren't many of them, or NICs that support 3x MIMO for that matter...

Ok, I received my router and got it all set up. It's definitely A LOT faster than my last netgear wireless n one, but it isn't fast enough to allow 1080p stream wirelessly. The computer I tested with could only manage a steady 144mbps connection to the router.... seems like you need to be pretty close to the router to get near the advertised 300 mbps. My PC is currently about 40 ft from my router, and on the same floor.

I could stream 720p movies with midrange bitrates (movies that are 5 GB or less when encoded). When trying a 720p movie that had a higher bitrate (was over 8GB in size) it wasn't smooth. The adapter I have is somewhat old so a new may help a little.

Basically if you could actually manage to get your wireless device to work at the advertised 300mbps speeds it would probably work for 1080p, but doing that is near impossible when you are a little ways from the router.
