athlon x4 vs phenom x4?

Thread Starter
Just want to know the difference in performance for an athlon x4 & phenom x4 ( clock for clock )

and would either be a good performance increase over my current athlon 245?

last question... are athlon x4's good to overclock?

I think this thread will give you as close of an answer as you're gonna get:

http://www.overclock.net/amd-cpus/89...enom-ii-4.html

Clock for clock, I'm thinking no more than 10% with the Phenom II

My Athlon II 620 won't go higher than 3.5 GHz with 2.1 GHz NB.

1: Not a huge difference, mostly apps that can take advantage of the L3 will see the only noticeable real world differences. Onoz saying about 10% seems about right, if not less (excluding apps that use L3 as said).
2: To answer your question we first need to know what your typical workload consists of. Sometimes more cores at lower clocks are better and sometimes less cores at higher clocks are better...
3: Every chip is different. I've had multiple Athlon II X4 635's... Most hit roughly the same OC, one of them couldn't OC much at all... only about an extra 200 mhz...
But generally, I'd say Athlon II's overclock quite well for such cheap chips.

Athlon processors are usually Phenom processors that didn't pass the L3 cache test. The only reason the Phenom is more powerful is because it has the L3 cache which is great for gaming.

Athlons overclock pretty well but are limited because of their multiplier. Black edition Phenoms have an unlocked multiplier which makes overclock easier for the user.
I got my Athlon up to 3.8ghz without much trouble.

I had the same question a while back and found it really depends on the application. The only difference is the L3 cache. My Athlon is a Phenom that has a disabled core and disabled L3 cache.

The phenom, hands down.
1) The phenom has better and more cache than the Athlon II does.
2) The phenom maintains a cooler temperature than the Athlon making it ideal for Overclocking
3) Better stepping than the athlon

The only cons are the price, and there is not much price difference. For overclocking and overall better processing the phenom is the natural choice.

Thanks for all of the answers, gives me a good idea.

But may I ask you Charlie, how come you went for the athlon x4 over the phenom?

If he was like me he didn't have the funds for the Phenom and was hoping for a lucky L3 unlock and stable...

I really don't recommend upgrading to any quad core on that VRM-incapable motherboard

PHENOM CLOCKS BETTER. better memory controller as well too. =) assuming this is a black edition.
