Well, 50 without undervolting is the "average" for a large number of mainstream laptops i find. I don't remember by previous temps but my CPU is undervolted so I'm idle at ~40C without my cooler. Under extreme load, I usually hit high high 60's to low 70's.

Do you want to undervolt your cpu?

I see... But I don't think my CPU is the one that is causing my computer to overheat and crash
I'm using speedfan to check my temperature, and sometimes i catch a glimpse of 110 degree celsius reading of my GPU before my computer shuts down, i guess 108 degree is the max for my GPU

will undervolting cool my GPU?

thanks a lot for helping me out (:

I'm sorry you're having a similar issue to mine but unlike yours my is not getting flaming hot. Only slightly warm, as it does normally when running anyhow.

Sorry for the late reply. School life. *sigh*

Wow, 110 is definitely a problem. Heck, I'd say anything over 90C for a laptop under extreme conditions is terrifying.

I've looked a bit and unfortunately, I can't find the cooling design for the Y450 (yet).
Undervolting the CPU will help reduce overall temps, but not by much in this case since the GPU is the culprit. Do you still have a warranty on this? If so, use it.
A little detail on when you bought the machine and how the temps have behaved till now will be of great help

Looks to me like either someone didn't install the heatsink properly/firmly or the GPU's thermal paste is actually just toothpaste ...

Oh, We also need to consider a few factors:
1. Direction of airflow for your laptop's internal fans
2. Airflow direction of cooler and desk fan. If the laptop is trying to push out air while the cooler and desk fan are keeping it from exiting properly, ... yeah, we'll have a problem.
3. Accumulation of dust in fans?
4. How are both your CPU and GPU temps at Idle?

(I'm subscribing to this thread so we can get to the bottom of this )

If you aren't comfortable with tightening Heatsinks or reapplying thermal paste, then I suggest you take it to a repair shop.

Have you ever opened up the backplates to clean out the dust and whatnot which accumulates in the air intake/fan system?

i HIGHLY doubt that you can under-volt your processor or graphics card, as it is a laptop. i would recommend getting either a can of compressed air, or using an air compressor (carefully) and blowing as much dust out of the computer as you can by blowing through vents and over fans.

next you should get a better cooler, i use the Cooler Master Notepal u2, which the fans are silent on, and they arent very fast, but even without the fans the heat of my laptop dropped by 10c, and up to 20c with both fans in correct locations.

the problem you have is that when gaming on a laptop, they often don't have effective cooling because everything is cramped. in a desktop, each part is designed to increase airflow which lowers temps.

if it isn't out of your budget, it is possible to build a rig with 3 core processor, legit windows, 4gb RAM, 500gb HDD, and get a discreet graphics card for ~450 dollars. that doesn't include monitor or peripherals, but you could probably pick some up for cheap. if you were going for low budget like that, you could get some super cheap CRT monitors for like a couple bucks.

ff topic:
just had an idea of making a wall of CRT monitors and making them all run in ATI xFinity setup so it would be one HUGE wall of CRT awesomeness. that would be awesome!

I can say cleaning would be my first guess. Every 6 months or sooner is a good idea on Laptop or PC. You WILL start getting temp increases if you dont and not to mention it looks terrible.

I have had Heat "spread" issues before due to the way the heat is piped around from the boards to the Shared Cooler. That cooler starts getting dusty and ur GPU starts heating everything else rather then cooling them.

When you clean it take all the panels off and the keyboard too (if you can). Blow that puppy out and take a look at the board or whatever you can see. Make sure you dont see any signs of burning, cracks or leaking capacitors.

If possible start it up with panels off. Feel the pipes. make sure they are all warming evenly. Cracks or bad seat/thermopaste may show head like say CPU temp shows very hot but pipe is cold ect. Also be sure to CHECK THE FAN and its bearings. if it feels or sounds weird it probably is and needs to be replaced.

Hopefully should do the trick.

its okay (: I have school too

I bought it in... december 2009, and the warranty's already over ): plus I've opened up my laptop once to check for and clear dust and seeing whether I can reset my bios from there (since i saw a few post which said that bios might be the problem)

Dust shouldnt be a problem... i've checked the main fan (is there a gpu fan? o_O)

GPU temps hover around 50 degrees at idle, CPU is around 40~45 at startup, and remains if i dont do anything heavy

i shall go try tightening the heat sink or applying thermal paste... any idea where i can get thermal paste? and compressed air?...

thanks guys!

lol. I understand your doubt, but, my CPU is undervolted to 0.9875V ( stable ) from Intel's 1.25V. My GPU is 15% overclocked (Since I can't undervolt it, I might as well crank some extra juice) when I feel like gaining a few extra fps ( I can show you pics if you want hehe). This is OCN. There's very little we don't do hardware-wise yet haha. (My next aim is to watercool my laptop but I need to wait for the warranty to expire first and make custom blocks )

Yeah, some laptops come with one fan and the appropriate heatpipe designs to cool both processors with just one so not having a dedicated GPU fan is fairly normal.

Your idle temps are definitely fine so it seems things only go wrong when the components are stressed. I would suggest trying to tighten (albeit gently) your heatsinks and see if that works. If it doesn't I'll be 80% convinced that its a thermal paste issue. You can get arctic silver as a cheap (yet rather effective) replacement. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835100007

I do strongly recommend you are 100% sure of what you're doing before the procedure though. Check how-to videos and the like to familiarize yourself with the process.

Also, double check the airflow direction when your cooler is on. you have to be sure air isn't being kept from the system. I'll look more into the Y450 cooling method to see what I can find. (Afterall, its my excuse not to do work anyway haha )
