Web Design / Development Setup

Thread Starter
Is anybody else here a web designer or web developer? I am just getting a feel for what others use in terms of software, hosting providers, and cross browser testing in the industry.

I have been building websites using HTML, CSS, a graphics editor, and some PHP for about 10 years now and here is what I use for software:
- Adobe Creative Suite CS5 (Mostly just Photoshop CS5 and Illustrator CS5)
- Coda (Insanely good OSX software for writing code)
- Transmit (Coda has FTP built in but I find Transmit to be better when transferring entire websites or image directories at a time in FTP)
- Firefox 4.0 with Web Developer Extension, Firebug, and ColorZilla
- HostGator for my webhost (VPS Level 3 with cPanel installed, and best of all I can charge clients for their own web hosting if need be. Easy renewable income!)

So there you have it! I like to keep things pretty simple and not go too crazy with software. Adobe is great, and Panic is an amazing software company too that is really growing in the OSX community. I can't use PC for building websites anymore.. the time efficiency with Snow Leopard is far greater than Windows 7 for what I do. Out of all of my software, I would say my Firefox extensions get used the most. Firebug and Web Developer are invaluable tools for web design.

Feel free to share your own web design or development setup!

I love using sublime text for any language I code in. Great program, and the beta (sublime text 2) is awesome.

I am familiar with all the software you have listed.
The workflow i employ and find really works well:

1.Photoshop/Illustrator/Flash: Creating the graphics you need and the layout. You can use it to cut up your images as well.

2. Adobe Fireworks: This next step assumes you did not cut your images up for the web. It is a very powerful tool, however i find that i can live without it.

3. Adobe Dreamweaver: This is perhaps one of the best softwares you can get for web development. It has a live view which is great and several tools to improve workflow from Photoshop and illustrator.

The CS is all you really need to develop stuff for the web. The reason for this is they are all integrated and the logic employed in carrying out functions stays the same.

I'm just starting in the Web Development world, I'm graduating in the fall. Its amazing the things you teach yourself that college doesnt really prepare you for when it comes to the tools of the trade. I discovered all these things on my own and Ill share it with anyone new in the trade.

Adobe CS5 is the standard in the trade. Your going to use it for everything, the learning curve though takes time to master. You cant just use it and know how to use it effectively. Im still learning how to use all the keyboard shortcuts for Photoshop...lol

For JavaScript I use Aptana Studio 3. It similar to Dreamweaver but it does a lot of the work for you so you save on some keystrokes. I also use Prototype, scriptaculos, and I'm learning j Query so I can use JavaScript more efficiently. For those that don't know its a shortcut way of doing JavaScript for your websites. Anyone can learn how to use this for their websites, just takes some practice.

Firefox 4 is the only thing I use for a browser. I use the same add ons as everyone else.

My hosting site of choice is HostMonster they have many great features and the price is not bad. The uptime is also great on the site and Ive never had issues with them.

Hardware wise I use my PC (Windows) Ive never used a Mac before so I can't make the comparison. But Ive overclock my PC like crazy and its super fast and never had issues with it. I also have an iPad which is very helpful since I can monitor sites and make adjustments from anywhere if need be. I also have my guides on there in case I forget how to write something and I can also ftp files from it too. If your a web developer then get yourself and iPad its a great investment.

I have three folders, one for web design, another for web development reference and maintenance, and one for images and getting ideas.

Folder One
Stage I: Flow chart or Outline of what the site is going to have.

iThoughtsHD(Cheap)/IdeaSketch/OmniGraffle(Expensive) = I use this to write all my thoughts on the layout or to chart how I want to design the webpage. I have both of these but if you can dish out the money OmniGraffle is the best.

iMockups for iPad or Sketchy = Great app for creating a mock website layout

Stage II:Codding

HTML-Edit or Textastic = This is for writing out my HTML/JAVASCRIPT/ETC... Has an upload option as well.

Css3Machine
= For Css3 design. It does it for you so you dont struggle as much if this isnt your strong point.

Palettes = Helpful in color selection and finding a good color scheme.

Folder Two
Reference Library:

PHP/VBS/CSS/JS/HTML5 PRO (Quick Guide Series) = great for looking up things. Sometimes I forget how a function or something is written so I look it in these. They are the best out there and I have looked.

Stage III: Maintenance of website afterwards.

Gusto/iSite = Lets you connect to a server and change a file and upload the new file to it.

WordPress: If you run a wordpress site this helps. This use to be buggy but they have really put the effort into improving this.

Folder Three
Stage IV: For drawing Images or just playing around with images to get ideas.

UI Sketcher/Adobe Ideas/Art Studio = (UI)Has a grid. I use all of them to write down and show my client ideas I have or that they want to have on the site.

PS Express = to edit images.

Helpful Apps: These are apps I use that help me with everything in general.

Galleried = Shows images of websites and random images.
Design Scene = same as Galleried.
Dribblr = same as the two above except you get to see others work.
StumbleUpon = Just like the one online except on your iPad. You would be surprised the ideas you get for layout with this.
WallpapersHD = this is for wallpaper but I sometimes get ideas for images with this.
Zite = Best app for information gathering. It can be customized to the topics you want to read about and it keeps me updated on the cutting edge of things.

Hope this isnt information overload. But I know how it is looking for the best apps for the iPad when it comes to people in our profession.

Yup but I use everyone of them at some point or another. I also have ibooks that has some books that I read all the time about things I want to learn about. But I like to learn and I have to say Im very dependent on the iPad. I even use it with my PC to transfer files and work on them when I ridding. In a way I guess its like my laptop for work.

But thanks for the rep and if you have any other questions just ask.

Do you know of any good web development communities? I'm looking for a good one to chat with other designers and developers on. Either on IRC or forum.

The sites I am presently a fan of are:
www.tutsplus.com (assortment of sub-sites)
www.bestwebgallery.com (for inspiration)
www.freelanceswitch.com
www.appstorm.net (assortment of sub-sites)
www.sitepoint.com/forum/ (helpful community, but responses may take up to a few days)

Any others that should be on this list?
Thanks
