1gb SD card restore

Thread Starter
About 5 years ago, somewhere around the year 2006, I got camera for my birthday and a 1 gb sd card along with it. I might have had at least one year worth of pictures that was less then maybe 200mb if I am not mistaken. I accidently deleted the pictures. I also had them backed up on my computer, but somewhere around that year I got a virus I got a virus and my computer would boot then bsod. I did not know how to fix the virus because I was not too computer savvy. The camera has been occasionally used and obviously data has been written over it. I would like to know how to restore the sd card's data back to around 2006 when I got it. It has been on my mind for a while and I never knew how to fix it.

BTW I've already tried many undelete softwares, so if you suggest any I might have already experimented with them.

Try Recuva. If it doesn't work you might just be out of luck.

I have already tried this software... It does not have to be software. It could be a service as well.

Have you tried Photorec? It was designed specifically for this purpose. Though given the age of the card and the fact that you've used it since then, it's unlikely you'll recover much of anything.

Yes, I have used this software as well. These data recovery software acknowledge that files are present, but i do not know if it is the correct file/picture because the file is either unrecoverable, is renamed oddly, or just plain corrupt. The big reason why getting these photos back is so hard is because data has been written over it. Are there any places that use advanced techniques that can recover the files or photos that are on the card?

You can't recover files that have been overwritten.

That's what i thought at first as well, but the files manage to be found and fragments of data are still present... I might consider taking it to a professional and see what they say.

How much money are you planning to spend? These must be some VERY important photos if you're willing to spend $1000 or more without even a guarantee of getting them back.

I knew it would be expensive but not $1000 expensive... more like $500. I'm just a "holding memories" type of guy and that's my main driving reason

They must not have been that important if you waited 5 years to do anything about it. But if the files have been overwritten the chances of even a data recovery service being able to get them back is somewhere between slim and none. Probably all the software is seeing is small portions of the file or place markers for where it was originally stored on the card. It can't restore the complete image because all of the bits are no longer there. Think of it like this. You have a jar of pasta sauce. You use it to make dinner, wash the jar out, then put in some leftover chicken soup, but you don't clean the inside of the lid. When you open the jar you can find a very small amount of the original pasta sauce stuck to the inside of the lid, but the rest of it is long gone. There isn't enough left to make a pasta dinner, only a few fragments.
