My PS3 has YLOD for the 3rd time now, I've been reviving it over and over again (heatgun + flux) but I'm due for a PS4, i just don't want to buy a PS3 and have the PS4 come out a year or so later.

Ubi should invest more in PC gaming though, it is very adaptive and the ability to change hardware means a game will continue selling even if a new graphics card comes out.
Ubisoft already ruined their reputation with PC gamers.

After their whole DRM debacle, I don't think anyone here wants anything to do with Ubisoft. Not to mention their games always release like a year after the console version..

If a dev makes a good PC version of their game, and appeals to PC gamers' needs with updates, and advertises it on Steam (<-- crucial step), then it will sell amazingly well.

A DICE developer who worked on BFBC2 said that if you include the Steam sales*, the PC versions of BFBC2 outsold the 360 and PS3 versions combined. And Capcom said the PC version of Street Fighter IV sold far more than expected.

*Valve does not release Steam sales to the public, so those online sales figures you see people spam on forums are retail only, and Steam is over 70% of the PC Gaming market, so those sales figures are irrelevant.

no, PC only ground breaking games make AAA Publishers create their own dumbed down versions of that game, and then market the hell out of it causing the Original superior game to end up losing the marketing war.

Tell CD projekt they cant make a profit on the PC.

I doubt next gen consoles are going to be a significant step up from the current ones. They'll just feel older faster.

They'll probably focus on better motion control integration and crap like 3d.

You're missing my point: It's not that one cannot make a profit on PC-only titles. Look at Blizzard, for pete's sake.

It's that the potential for greater profit lies with consoles, simply because there are more console gamers out there. And there are even greater profits to be had by releasing on console and PC and handheld and platform-du-jour. So especially with new and untested IP, maximizing your potential customers by developing cross-platform is the smart way to go.

I would sort of argue that it's been that way for several generations though. At the time, I didn't think that the jump from PS1 to PS2/Xbox was super-amazing...yes the graphics were better and there was a lot more dialogue thanks to the space available on a DVD, but ultimately I was underwhelmed because the PC already had that stuff. And the same thing when the jump from PS2/XBox to PS3/X360 came...better graphics again, absolutely yes...but I wasn't amazed because it's just another evolutionary improvement. So I agree with you, I personally expect another unwhelming jump with PS4/Xbox 3...not because they will be bad consoles, but just because "better graphics" don't do it for me anymore.

Maybe that's why the Wii was so much more interesting at the time. Even though it's pretty tired now, back then it was at least something totally new that we'd not seen before.

This late in the cycle will separate the men from the boys when it comes to programing IMHO. Games on the PS3 like Uncharted 2 and soon 3 continue to please my eyes despite the age of the Hardware. That's a good developer. Also, due to the POS economy and how much money $ony and M$ lost outa the gate, im not supprised that they want to ride this one out abit. Im ok with that. The longer they hold out, the more tech will advance and the better the end product "may" turn out. I'm fine with graphics where they are for now. I want to see innovation and a MAJOR leap for the next generation. Not a motion control fan by anymeans but I Kinda see where they are going with them.

I agree with Vulcan, nothing will happen to consoles in the next two years or so.

However, the PS/2 was quite a step, especially with a PC in the day that has equal capabilities was cost prohibitive for most users. It is hard to say to someone that not only do they need a PC with a set of specifications, but that they have to spend a large amount on a video card, an amount comparable to an entire console. So sure, the hard core OCN type user will justify a PC based gaming system - but it is really hard to sell that set of expectations to mom and dad. One has to remember that in the days that the PS/2 came out, DVD drives were pretty much non existent on the PC platform, and even CD drives were not all that common.

What will push the console market is that their video systems are now obsolete. Updating the video is certainly possible for the manufacturers, but I don't think they'd be able to push units based on that alone. They will want a complete change, not only more modern video, but more modern processors. Of course, the Cell is already multi-cored, so it is ahead of the curve, and is only "obsolete" because it's been around for a while.

The long cycle is not unexpected - people are still using the PS/2 for games because it is adequate for many games, and suits the purpose. I think there is still a lot of life in the current platforms - just like the tens of millions of people that continue using and enjoying the PS/2 because it is entirely adequate and fun for people.

I don't think that PC gaming takes away from consoles - both have their place, and a console is a winner when it comes to a home entertainment device, because they are no muss and no fuss, unlike the much higher level of maintenance and setup that a PC requires. Of course, a PC is more of a "winner" with OCN types, because half the fun of gaming is in making a machine capable of gaming. But for plug in and have fun, the consoles win.
