Windows 7 is just as bloated as Vista, if not more, you can't call one "bloated" and the other one not when they are almost the same, minus some driver level updates and extra DRM of 7 (not forgetting the different GUI of course). Vista is just Windows 7 beta. XP is good now because hardware now is light years ahead of the 2001/2002 components XP was designed for (and because they've layered in tons of extra hardware support in between then and now), but when XP was released it was also bloated and unstable, and just a re-skinned Windows 2000 (which is the best OS they ever made BY FAR). Until about SP2 for 64bit and SP3 for 32bit versions, XP was also crap.

Wow, I'm really surprised to see all the Vista hate. Was it a great OS on launch? Most definitely not, but neither was 98 or XP, not to mention 95's problems early on. By the time SP1 was released, I had very few problems with Vista and SP2 upped the performance noticeably.

ME was easily the worst version of Windows, primarily because it was so broken there was no fixing it.

For all of you saying you grew up on 98 so you can't hate it... Did you grow up on 98 or 98SE? 98 was as much a beast as Vista pre-SP1, easily.

Windows 7 is basically Vista 2.0. They didn't rework things massively like they did between XP and Vista for example, so there weren't the hardware issues there were before. Also, as others have pointed out, Vista was being put on machines that didn't have the hardware to run it. By the time 7 came out, hardware had advanced to the point of negating this drawback. Try putting 7 on one of those early Vista rigs that had issues. It won't work any better.

From worst to first, for me:

Windows ME
Windows 95
Windows 98 (non SE)
Windows NT
Windows Vista
Windows 2000
Windows 98SE
Windows XP
Windows 7

I liked vista. I never had any problems with it and once all the service packs started rolling out it became a very stable platform for me.

I got Vista without any service packs on this notebook in 2007, and I hadn't had too many OS specific problems with it. I remember when nVidia's mobile drivers were absolutely diabolical for Vista, but that was resolved after a year or so. Games did, however, run horribly in Vista, but I have no idea if that was the OS itself or if it was because I had never formatted until getting 7. The stock hard disk probably hadn't helped (plus, it was 120GB, which got close to full very quickly). SP2 fixed most of its quirks, but 7 is definitely much better.

I blame largely the punters who had kept complaining about Vista's delays. This was pretty much a ground-up job, so of course it was going to take Microsoft a while to get it right--not to mention that there was a large number of manufacturers who hadn't bothered to make their applications to be compatible with Vista. If Vista was released later, then one could almost guarantee that Vista would have been a lot closer to 7 in many ways.

DEEDIT: Need I also reiterate how badly XP was received? Vista's launch release was far more stable in comparison. Hell, on a decent system, it could be argued that Vista is as stable as XP, if not moreso. Either way, many hypocrites bash on Vista, even though they'd bashed on XP while it took about four or five years to even mature.

Windows CEMENT is the worst.

CE + ME + NT.

ME was the worst. Vista wasn't good at all on launch. After all the updates and service packs, it got better, but still fails in comparison to 7. Honestly I would still choose an XP SP3 setup vs Vista.
