Just to update you fellas since I started this whole mess. I actually ended up opting for this Sapphire HD6970 2GB 100311-2SR I'm actually kind of bummed that I won't be able to play with flashing the BIOS and all, but this should be a good overclocker that's not quite so loud even though it's non-reference.

Definately get the Twin Frozr III!
It will most certainly unlock and is the best overclocker among the 6950´s.
The problems you have heard about the card must be self inflicted in my oppinion because outer than that I only hear good things about it.

Get the card you will have a lot of fun and some serious hoursepower

Had anyone noticed any effect whatsoever of flipping the fan switch on the side? It isn't labeled I don't even know which one is performance. So far I can't tell a different in fan speed or anything

Ouch!

What I am really trying to do is to keep the fan around 40% most of the time with a target temp of 70C under load. This works fine with afterburner but I would really prefer to set this in bios as I did with my last card, an 8800 GTS.

I changed the settings in RBE 1.28 but the fan speeds do not appear to be affected. I confirmed that the bios did change by re-analyzing after a reboot.

Could this be a bug with RBE?

So can anyone tell me if I would get better performance from a TF3 OC'd, or an unlocked reference model? I'm leaning towards the TF3, but just wondering in case it won't unlock which makes more of a difference. Thanks.

I just received my MSI R6950 Twin Frozr III and I'm in the process of ovcerlocking it in MSI Afterburner. If I could unlock the shaders then that would be great, but I had an MSI R5770 Twin Frozr II before and I love these Twin Frozr cards so it's not a big deal. I thoroughly checked before buying it and knew that an unlock to a 6970 was out of the question, but it's a great card nonetheless.

I'll update you guys with my overclocking results soon enough.

So I ended up at GPU Core: 925 MHz and Memory: 1390 MHz. Not an amazing overclock, but it's at stock volts so I could no doubt get it higher if I want. Given that the speeds have surpassed a stock 6970, all I need now is a shader unlock and I'll have myself a 6970 for the price of a 6950.
