Anyone Actually Own MSI 6950 Twin Frozr III And Unlock It? - Page 7

Also owner of a msi TF3 OC/PE, and I can confirm that there is indeed two distinct BIOS on this card. My switch is not a fan speed switch like I have seen others speculate. However I cannot unlock the shaders on either BIOS thru RBE or thru the DOS boot/atiflash tools. I can verify that the BIOS is indeed flashing but the shaders are simply not there.

Any suggestions?

I just ordered the Twin Frozr III from Newegg, and it was damaged so I had to send it back. I didn't bother trying to OC it or unlock it for good reason, but when I opened up MSI Afterburner I couldn't even mess with the voltage. My Afterburner is modified too to allow me to bypass any locks on the card. I just chalk this up to the damaged card for now, and hope the one I get back isn't damaged.

Just to ask here too since no one responds on the MSI forums that they own this card. DId anyone else receive a card where the header (where display ports plug in) was badly bent?

So what is the deal now?

Does GPU-Z just not recognize the unlock on the TWFIII?
Or does it just not work?

I tried to unlock my 6950 but it didn't work. GPU-z (last version) tell me that there are 1408 shaders.
What a crap, I feel I was scammed.

How much OC I should give to the card to get the performance of an unlocked one?

Common! I seriously doubt that the seller (MSI for sure did not) promised you in writing that the card will unlock... and the performance between stock clocks and stock clocks+unlocked is within the margin of error
OC and be happy
On the topic: mine unlocked, but did not see any performance increase and also got artifacts all over the place
I am starting to believe that all this unlock gimmick was a very clever sale campaign
Look here to see that clock to clock 6950 and 6970 yield almost the same results.
part of the conclusion:
"...The Radeon HD 6950 is 10-13% slower than the Radeon HD 6970, but this gap can be easily closed by overclocking... Besides, the Radeon HD 6950 has lower temperatures and, consequently, produces less noise..."

I got my MSI 6950 TF3 PE (non-OC edition lol) yesterday and it seems mine doesn't like me OCing. Tried upping the voltage but the core won't even go above 910. Anything above 910 crashes / freezes / driver reset when I test in Crysis 2 / Dirt 3 / Kombuster.

So I looked around and did the shader mod (used atiwinflash from the instructions here) and it worked. However I can't change my voltage after that and also it seems after more testing I can only set my core to 880 max but I get similar performance (perhaps a bit faster) than my OC before. I then looked around and found the MSI 6970 bios and flashed it. To my surprise it worked and everything's perfectly fine (temps are great as usual thanks to TF3 cooler and there's very little noise or coil whine) so I have mine unlocked now at 6970's clocks (ie. 880/1375). My mem can go up to 1500 but there isn't any performance gain so I left it at 1375 lol.

Aren't 6950s basically 6970s that didn't quite make the cut? I don't believe MSI guarantees that this card will unlock but there is a possibility it will as it is sort of based on the reference design (with a few additions of course).

Can you send me the BIOS you're using on the card?

I noticed that MSI AB don't recognize my card correctly.

Check "Graphics card" & "Driver version".

Just to be clear that's not 6970 BIOS, but modded 6950 one to unlock the shaders and remove OC limit
