"Give up" centric strategies.

Something that is starting to bother me more and more with game developers.. is the "give up" approach.

First, lets start with PC.. opps.. people pirate games.. So lets give up and sell to consoles after all there we don't have to worry about minimum, maximum, and recommended specs or pirates.. hell to a large degree we don't even have to worry about making a decent game!

Second, Whats that? ps3 and 360 are losing their shine? lets start complaining that these consoles "aren't powerful enough" do do what we need them to do, or what we aspire to do.

Third, Whats that? no one is going to buy the new $1000+ consoles? well lets just make angry bird clones for the phone until people stop buying that too!

Now.. Lets be honest here.. No current gen consoles do not compete with computers in terms of graphics.. that doesn't mean the developers are at a total dead end..

Lets be real here..as far as cpu power is concerned the "want" to upgrade occurs long before the "need" in terms of gaming.. As many people out there that purchase insane rigs and buy way over board cpu's and everything else.. For average One monitor joe even what are now antique cpu's or "low end" cpu's are really ample headroom.

Gpu's do get swapped out a little bit faster.. but, lets be real here.. new consoles would just receive what is by even todays standards out dated gpu's.

Maybe I'm just getting older but, when I was a kid growing up.. I just remember enjoying the games.. not being so cynical about everything..

Then again, back then all I knew was that I enjoyed games.. and somewhere just maybe some crazy japanese programmers and writers enjoyed bringing them to me. (I didn't realize when I was younger just how much of what I loved came from japan funny really..)

Feels like the industry standard today is "complain, complain, complain, try to appease share holders not our customers"

This should be in the raves and rants section as a RANT. I'm not sure what exactly your point is here... seems more like word vomit about the dislikes with current games. You do have one point, these companies are public companies--their only objective is to increase shareholder value. Consoles have the most market share in gaming, hence, it is much more profitable for them to develop for these. My friends can afford a $300 console and play w/ me, but they can't all afford crazy expensive computers that will last as long as a console.

Not saying I disagree-I prefer to game PC's, but economically, it just makes sense. If programmers could make games look better on mediocre PC's, then it would be a win. This is why I keep preaching about OnLive.

Well, I personally have a horribly old PC so usually I'm forced to enjoy newer games at low resolutions and details. Which makes it really easy to see behind the curtain of good graphics and see the weak content that builds on them. Modern games are like those ridiculous Fast-and-Furious-like Hondas that look like space ships but couldn't stand through a half serious race.

Long story short I'd have already upgraded my rig and started buying games again if they were ANY good. But today's digital entertainment is nothing but unbalanced, rush multiplayer content with a short, soulless singleplayer campaign slapped on it and sold for more than ever before (This, of course, is a generalization and doesn't apply to every single game of the last years. There are always pearls in the mud, however they become more and more rare over the time).
