3 TB hdd issue !!! - Page 3

Is your Seagate drive one of those new 4k sector drives? If so, that explains why you only saw 765GB at first.

There is one feature included on the Seagate XT 3TB we need to take a look at: “Advanced Format” or 4K sector formatting. This feature isn’t exactly new since Seagate implemented it with their 2TB hard drive a while ago, but it is and will be an integral part of higher capacity drives. The reasoning for this vaires, but it basically boils down to the fact that in order to move to larger and larger hard drives, 512 byte sector formatting had to be phased out and replaced with 4k sectors due to Master Boot Record limitations. If they had not done so, your fancy new 3TB drive would be at best be turned into a 900 GB drive since the system would ignore everything below the 2.1TB mark and “see” only the portion above it. At worst, it wouldn’t be recognized at all.

Basically, your drive may not have been aligned properly for 4k sectors. The OS may have seen the drive a 512 byte sector drive instead of a 4k sector drive. That is likely why you were missing 2.1TB at first.

However, Windows 7 and Vista should already have support for 4k sector drives. Plus you are using 64-bit Win 7 so you should have no problems with long LBAs. confused.gif

Try installing the latest Intel Rapid Storage Technology.

This is what Seagate says in the knowledge base regarding 3TB drives only showing up as 746.52GB.

Besides the CPU, many computer systems utilize special Intel chipsets that handle the I/O from the disk drives. Depending on your system hardware, Windows operating systems may be using Intel device Rapid Storage Technology (RST) drivers which are common. Alternative Microsoft Windows drivers are also commonly used.

Like other kinds of software, the Intel RST drivers are updated to keep pace with new technology. The Intel drivers found in retail releases of Windows 7 have a 2.2TB limitation. Rather than cut off the capacity at 2.2TB, the limitation expresses itself as the remainder above 2.2TB. In other words, the driver causes the Windows operating to see a 3TB drive as 746.52 GiB (or 800GB).

If this is the case, then updating the driver should allow Windows to detect the drive as 3TB.

For disk drives beyond 2.2TB, the proper level of Intel RST driver should be v10.1 or higher. If your system uses an earlier version you can update the driver by following the update instruction on the Intel RST support website. The Intel support website has tools that automatically check Intel device drivers.
It could be that your motherboard does not properly support hard drives over 2TB. This is the reason you keep reverting back to losing hard drive capacity. There is an EVGA thread where people had problems with hard drives/arrays larger than 2TB with more recent boards. It may be a BIOS/mobo issue.

(Just a FYI for any future readers, 32-bit OS cannot utilize partitions greater than 2TB due to needing to use large LBAs. Only 64-bit OS can use 3TB partitions.)
