Problem with nVidia 9800GTX+ SLI

Thread Starter
Hi guys.

A problem has come up a couple months ago, but I hadn't had the time to figure it out then.

When I enable SLI, everything "seems" ok. But when I start to load games in full-screen mode, the screen is "overlaid" with a continuous flicker of red pixels. When I switch to windowed mode, the flicker isn't there.

Initially I thought it was a driver issue, so I have tried reinstalling Windows again, or remove drivers + driver sweeper, but the problem still occurs. So I guess it might be hardware. Well, the cards alone work fine (full-screen no flicker). But, one combination I tried removed the flickering - not using the SLI bridge. The moment I removed the SLI bridge, all is well (full-screen no flicker). This isn't exactly the optimal solution, but I have lived with it since due to time constraints and I needed at least a working PC.

So, it comes down to the SLI bridge. Thinking maybe the bridge is spoilt, I borrowed my friend's new SLI bridge (he just bought a new 1366 platform last year and didn't use SLI, so he lent it to me seeing it is not used anyway). I put it on my 9800GTX+, but alas, the problem still occurs.

Any help on this would be appreciated. Thanks.

Btw, the flicker happens universally for any game, in full-screen mode. The game is totally unplayable with the flicker (ok actually playable but not exactly pleasing to the eyes). I have attached how the flicker looks like below.

On a side note, a separate problem I have seems to be driver issues. Playing intensive games but without 100% GPU usage seems to put the drivers in a random crashing mode. That is, the screen and controls will freeze, screen turns black, blinks a few times, then back to game itself as if nothing happens. However, I get the "The display driver xxx.xx has stopped responding and has fully recovered" message on my tray icon area. While tolerable, (ok not really), it makes fast-paced games rather unpleasant to the point of unplayable. E.g. racing game turning halfway screen blacks out for about 8 seconds and returns to game and my turning is botched now. The problem, again, doesn't seem to be game-specific as it happens on practically all games except MMORPGs. On some occassions, the driver causes the game to completely crash-to-desktop, and once caused a BSOD. driver named was nvlkmdd.sys or something similar.

EDIT : Forgot to mention that clocks have been stock for a long time. ANY overclock causes artifacting in games.

Perhaps the SLI-connectors on the cards are damaged?

Try resetting your GPU to stock clocks if OC'd and run Furmark for for awhile. Might be second card is in need of some baking and be the source of your problem.

SLI works on fullscreen and not in window so given you are fine on one card, so it limits the problem to the 2nd card. You are already found that your friend's SLI bridge did not solve it.

Run each card alone an see if they run fine by there self an go from there.

I have tried each card on its own, they work fine in full screen.

Forgot to mention I have been running stock clocks for too long. Any overclock seems to cause the graphics to artifact.

I intend to pass this PC to my brother, so it still needs to work properly regardless of what I'm intending to get soon (GTX580 SLI).

Btw, added videos to show how the flickering looks like in real life instead of static image.

Hi scarletoath. It's a long shot, but how likely is it you would be able to test the cards in SLI in a second PC? I would give this a shot to see if you have the same issues when gaming. I'd recommend contacting the manufacturer too.

Manufacturer as in retailer/distributor?

I can take it to test in another PC, although currently it is a bit of a hassle (what with my uni exams coming up). In the current state WITHOUT the bridge the PC is playable and useable, just probably not at its maximum potential. Has anyone even met such a SLI flickering problem before? Didn't find anything on it anywhere.

However, not sure if anyone noticed, that I also mention a seemingly separate and unrelated problem of display driver frequently but randomly crashing and recovering fully most of the time. That makes games much more unplayable than the flicker issue actually. Like when playing races for example, I would be doing so well in it or just complete it, only for it to be rendered void because the display driver crashed and caused the game to CTD.

That, unfortunately sounds like one or both of your cards may be on its way out. In my experience, constant driver crashes/resetting usually points towards imminent hardware failure.

I suggest you reset all your OCing to stock and re-test.

Drivers crashing I had when either my CPU or GPUs where not OCed well.
It might be that either your CPU is a bit "tired" or your GPUs are well... on their way to the great GPU maker up in the sky.

So if you can, retest all in stock, or test the GPUs in stock on a different computer.

What i worry is that hardware is gone case.

Everything is on stock. Even CPU is 3.0 GHz stock, my RAM isn't even at the specified rating of 1066 MHz (running stock JEDEC of 800 MHz). GPUs all on stock.

The only thing that MIGHT be called out of place is that this quad core is being used on a Striker Extreme, although I never had problems for over a year.

Interestingly, the driver crash happens on another PC I have, running 8800GTX on MSI P7N Platinum SLI. Is it ALL my hardware is spoilt? The oldest component is at most 4 years old (8800GTX) while the 9800GTX+ are about 2 years old.

Just wanna see if I can do anything before I take out the GPU for testing.
