Asus Maximus IV + i7 2600K @ 4.6Ghz?

Thread Starter
Ok. Just recently built my rig and wanted to know if I could actually go higher than 4.6Ghz and be stable. So far, most attempts have either left me with blue screens, or I will run for a while, and the system would freeze up, or should I just be happy with 4.6?

Here are my specs:
  • MB: Asus Maximus IV
  • CPU: i7 2600K
  • CPU COOLER: Corsair H70
  • MEM: 16GB (4x4) G. Skill 2133 (F3-17000CL9Q-16GBXLD) 9-11-9-28
  • CASE: Coolermaster Haf X 942
  • POWER: Coolermaster Silentpro 1000w
  • VIDEO: ASUS GTX 590
  • HD: Intel 510 Series 120GB SSD
  • OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64
  • CD/DVD/BD: Asus (BW-12B1LT)

Things I have tried:

I have tried 47x100, but that runs for a while, and then locks up. I guess there probably are other things I should be adjusting to make sure this doesnt happen. I did run at 4.9Ghz for about 30 minutes or so playing a game, but it locked up again. I used 47x100 and just bumped the BCLK up until I reached 4.9Ghz. Again, not the best way, but just curious if folks out there have a similar setup. Auto-tune, meh, lol, gives me 4.3Ghz.

Any suggestions, recommendations would be helpful. Glad to be a new member of this site, have looked but never joined until now.

First of all welcome to OCN!

I'm in the process of building a rig very similar to yours, and from what I've heard you could try replacing the stock fans on the H70 with some Scythe Gentle Typhoon AP-15 120mm fans for better CPU temps. Also make sure you're making the most of the airflow in your case, by installing all of the optional fans and having your H70 in a push/pull configuration with the air exhausting out the back. With the H70 it's hard to get anything more than 4.6 and I'd be pretty happy with that, since something like 4.8 won't give a hugely noticeable difference.

Welcome to OCN.

Couple of questions:

1) What Vcore did you use for 4.9GHz
2) Is PLL overvoltage enabled in the BIOS? (this makes a big difference)
3) What kind of temps were you seeing with your H70?

Because you have 4 sticks of RAM. You'll need a VCCIO of about 1.1v. I couldn't boot past 4.9 until i upped that.

Auto tune put me a 4.4GHz too. It's useless, lol. I can get another 1GHz out of it.

Thanks for the quick reply!

Yeah, I am very happy with the performance on this system. Of course, I am a World of Warcraft player, so its a bit overkill for that game, but I needed something better and decided to build instead of buying another 'name brand'.

With all the settings on ultra in WoW, I get around between 25-60 FPS running at 2560x1600. Where before, I was getting 10-30 FPS tops, on lower settings (not ultra) but still at the 2560x1600 resolution.

I do have the fans on the H70, as suggested by the manual, in a push/pull taking air from the outside and pulling it into the case. I assume that is what you meant. =P I might replace those fans, but I don't think my issue is temperature, for every time I have OCd to 4.8-4.9, the temp is only around 35-45c.

But you're right, 4.6 is nothing to scoff at, I should be satisfied, but I am the same guy who keeps buying crap for his car to give it more horsepower =/. So yeah.

I didn't really muck around with the Vcore at all. Wasn't really sure what was 'safe', and didn't really want to hear the pop and fizzle of the cpu. I will also have to check to see if the PLL overvoltage is enabled int eh BIOS, if it isn't by default, then it is probably not. The temps I was seeing was around 25-40C, depending on the load. But 40C was max and only peaked that that amount.

I never set the Vcore. So it would be stock, not at home at the moment, so not sure what that would be. Thanks for the reply!

The vcore is set to 1.35v. The default. The BCLK is at 100 and the frequency multiplier is set to 46. That is stable for me. The temperature of the CPU right now is 38c to 47c.
