Audio Setup - Will this work

Thread Starter
Hi everyone, I want to upgrade my audio system but I am new to all of this so I am not sure what to get.

I have used the onboard sound and my Logitech X230s for as long as I can remember and I think it is time for an upgrade

I am looking at the following options

Sound Card:
1) Asus Xonar DX OR
2) Asus Xonar STX

Speakers:
1) Audioengine A5
2) Audioengine A2
3) Audioengine P4

Subwoofer
I have no clue what to get but I think I need some subs since the audioengines don't go low enough.

Primary reason for upgrading is for music. Second is for movies. Not interested in gaming performance.

Music I listen to ranges from instrumental to bass heavy club music.

Does the Xonar Essence have an advantage over the DX based on my speaker choice?

Also, Is the A5 really that far ahead of the other in terms of quality?

I live in the Philippines so brand choices are quite limited compared to the USA

Is price a consideration?

You do realize the A5's have subs?

If you really intend to do serious movie watching I would recommend a sub. For music it's a personal taste thing.

The A5 is 2.0 and goes down to 50hz if I remember correctly.

For bass heavy music and specially movies, I think a proper sub is needed.

As for budget I could spring for the Xonar STX and the A5 if it gives me better audio.

Maybe the A2 will be fine if I get subs anyway (since A2 is cheaper)? Just make the crossover to subs at around 80hz? Or will the A5 still sound better even with a sub?

For music and movies a discreet sub is a must. I have yet to see bookshelf's like a Infinity w/amp and sub:

http://www.infinitysystems.com/home/...=US&Region=USA

I have the 40's and they are hardly bookshelf as they suggest. Let me tell you though they rock in movies/music.

With that said my personal picks for a pc sound card in order would be:

1) http://www.buyxg.com/store/item.aspx?key=SC-103-108

note: comes w/kick butt gaming headset

2) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...0Titanium%20HD

Finally a solution from Creative that competes with Xonar Essence

3) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-004-_-Product

Only because I live in my headset anymore with family that I don't want to disturb w/my ripping speakers except in the case of home theater. I like the idea of a quality headphone amp.

Bookshelf's:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-004-_-Product

http://www.crutchfield.com/S-6l6dUMJ...ry.html?tp=186

Actually considering these but again I really don't use my Logitech Z560's so seems pointless to waste money with something I will hardly use although I understand they are delicious.

I apologize I have no experience w/audioengine and just wanted to offer more options. These have me intrigued but quite pricey:

http://www.crutchfield.com/p_772A5N/...ay=Audioengine

Bamboo would make for quite a dense cabinet. I wonder...........

For whatever it's worth I have a pair of Bamboo P4's, a Xonar DX, and a sub (Jamo 250). I'd be curious to compare the setup to other setups at a similar price but that said, it's hard to imagine doing a whole lot better for the money. The speakers are very clear and the sub seems to put out pretty respectable amount of good sounding bass for an 8 inch.

I'd be curious to hear speakers of a similar price from other quality makers compared to the Audioengines. That said, Audioengine seems like a very good brand to me.

Also, I don't believe the A5's have subs as was mentioned above. They have an amp. but not subwoofers.

Id go with the DX over the STX unless you plan to use headphones with it. Then the STX will pay off for itself.

Id just get the sound card + speakers first and add the sub after you setup everything.

And with built-in subwoofer ports, the Audioengine 5 adds incredible low-end bass without the need for an external subwoofer.
Seemed odd to me also, just sayin'

"Subwoofer ports"

Notice it says "no need for an external subwoofer." They are 2.0 speakers. If you can't see that then I don't what else to say.

Don't say anything and let the buyer decide if they are going to deliver enough bass for him.

Obviously it isn't a subwoofer
