I have a pc recording local tv 24/7 (clear qam) even though I can only descramble the basic stuff(++edit-it has no monitor / no mouse.kb / controlled via win remote desktop and tightvnc / only uses a pcie x1550 for minimal power draw on idle on a Ist gen Antec 430w
(<410w w/ Fuhyuu caps / by CWT?)+++(it has 3 hvr1800 tuners so I can record simultaneously if theres a conflict in sched) /edit ----
. I havent gotten down to having it sleep effectively but it does wake up on time (but its always awake coz it wont sleep within the time frame). This pc shares the files to my tv pc so I can play them. I had it in wifi but I was only limited to 2mbps (g wifi)=random stuttering and ffwd delay.SO I hard wired it to the router (+1 switch) and it works smooth as silk. I use win 7 to record the hd channels and let it cram all the vidz on a jbod 4x.ide setup (450gb) then I just transfer the shows I want to save to another sata drive for later viewing (havent looked into locking certain shows from deletion). So far MCE has been flawless recording on sched although sometimes some shows arent on schedule so the show gets cut off by some minutes. The setup is good asides from the sleep/wake sytem as I use the default task scheduler or maybe its my scripting has been less than adequate. Thought Id just mention it just to give you an idea of what could work for you even though it requires an extra setup.

You could set deletion rules in Tasks > Settings and also on a per series basis in 7MC. On my set-up, I have the news set to just keep the latest episode while most TV shows are set to keep until storage is low. For favorite series (NCIS, Bones), I have it set to never delete. Another thing, you could adjust the amount of time it buffers at the start/end of the show. I have mine set to 5 minutes. For basketball games, I have the buffer set to 1 hour to allow for overtime, etc.

Thanks for the input thus far. The more, the better. Different setups work for different folks and the more I hear the closer I get to deciding whats best for this situation.
