Release vs Version

Thread Starter
Stupid question.... What exactly is the difference between a Version and a Release?
Code:
Application Version Release
gzip 1.3.5 11.0.1.el5_4.1
device-mapper 1.02.32 1.el5
zlib 1.2.3 3

if it is anything to do with development, it would be like:

a version number to that release branch.

like this sorta, XP was the release, SP1/2/3 are the versions...

i swear it makes sense in my head smile.gif

It's helpful to be more specific as to what you mean.

For instance, you didn't mention that this is a Red Hat related question, and while it was obvious to me, it apparently wasn't obvious to transhour or presumably to other readers.

And the answer is also specific to RPM, the Red Hat Package Manager file format.

In this case, "Version" means the version of the program as provided by its author(s). "Release" means the version of that package provided by the packager.

that was actually my first thought, but from other post that i've read of duckie's, i assumed he was referring to a development situation...oh well smile.gif

Sorry, I didn't know it was a Red Hat only example.

Thanks though, now I understand!

Yep, that's an RPM thing. You can find a more thorough explanation here.

Thanks!

I'm in trouble.... my SAs could not tell me the difference between Release and Version. I have to use these guys since we are not allowed admin/root access.

These n00bs don't even know how to do performance analysis.
