E8500 to 4,4?

Thread Starter

Hi!
I want to overclock my CPU to atleast 4,2.
I found a guy on youtube who went to 4,4GHz:

Should I try to overclock this far, I now have my CPU set at 3,8 (I have not taken any tests yet, becouse i wanna overclock more, then go down to stable.

My questions are:

Should I overclock this much, is it to much, or should my CPU handle it fine?
Should I use: 8x550 with CPU voltage: 1,3625V
or
9,5 x 465 with CPU voltage: 1,3625V and Northbridge = 1,4V?

He did this on the video, wich one is best to reach 4,4. (I know 9,5 x 465 is a BIT more than 4,4)?

What is northbridge and must I overclock my RAM?

I am no expert what comes to LGA 775 overclocking, but that FSB seems a bit high so you probably will have rise that NB voltage, and first shoot for 4.2Ghz with 1.35Vcore, run Prime95 Blend for an hour and if it passes without errors shoot to 4.4Ghz and rise the Vcore up untill its stable.

I would try the x9/9.5 multiplier first. 550FSB may take some work, but if you enjoy the challenge, go for it. . You have a pretty good Motherboard. Can your RAM handle 1100MHZ?

To be honest this is my first overclocking CPU.
I have no clue how to overclock RAM.
If somebody have a kind of "recipe", like CPU FSB:xxx
Multiplier:x,x
etc.
What is NB voltage?

Sorry for my ignorance..

EDIT:

This is what I know about my RAM (hope it's enough)

"OCZ DDR2 4096MB Gold GX XTC Dual Channel"
"PC2-6400 2x2048MB 800MHz. (5-5-5-18)"

And thanks for the help so far!

I'm really glad I joined this forum, all my posts get answers in an amazingly short time...

I hope you're ready to spend alot of time if you're really looking for 4.4.

You'll need DDR2 1066 (not 800) and your motherboard will need to be stable at 480-490FSB.

Realistically you should get 4.0 without much trouble. Once you pass 4.1 you need to be ready to do some work and spend alot of time stress testing and tweaking. Your chip may simply not do much over 4.0 either, depends on luck of the draw.

First thing is going to be bumping your CPU multiple down to 6x and testing your RAM/FSB for stability. For 4.4, your board will need to hold around 490FSB, which is pretty high. See if you can get 490x6 stable, with your memory set to be 1:1 and testing with Prime Blend 4-5 hrs. So at 490FSB, your memory will be 490x2 = DDR2 980.

Look for threads in this site for your specific board and recommended settings.

Well 4,4GHz isn't something I must have, I am free for any suggestions. If 4,0 GHz is best, then 4,0 it is. 4,4 Ghz was more of a max.
But if I wanted 4,2 what would my settings be like ( i will google for it on the site) ?
Is it totally necessary to overclock my RAM if I use 9,5x442=4,199GHz
What would my Voltage be (CPU)?
Voltage =1.35?

Your RAM is linked to your FSB, so when you OC your RAM must raise with it.

OK, so when I OC the CPU, the RAM ets OC'ed with it.
Is NB voltage RAM voltage?

What should this be set to, cant find any RAM voltage recommended settings for my setup and the OC I want :S

EDIT:

I stumbled over this:

in some cases a lower multiplier with higher FSB will provide more stable, but not always. Additionally, graphics cards generally tend to perform slightly better on computers which cpu's are clocked with a higher FSB, versus a computer with a CPU at the same clock speed using a higher multiplier and lower FSB.

I am doing OC for this exact reason, lower my GPU bottlenecking (my CPU bottlenecks my GPU GTX580)

Post in here to get some basic setting advice for your board:

http://www.overclock.net/intel-mothe...rs-thread.html

You need to know what NB voltage you need in order to get 450-460 FSB. If you us 9.5, you should have an easy time to get 4.0. Then you'll just need to play with VCore.

NB is NOT RAM Voltage. Northbridge or MCH is the memory controller.

Some quad-loving games will still be laggish on your E8500.
