They wouldn't put such drastic changes in a game if the game was thriving or had a strong future. In my eyes, they saved TF2 from becoming inevitably stagnant and gave it a facelift (many times over). I have very VERY few other games that have kept me for as long as TF2 and I don't mind letting Valve make changes that hardly affect gameplay. I've gotten my money's worth and I am glad to be able to still play a fresh game today.
*obligatory i like this charitable cause comment*

Now that I've got that out of the way...

1) I agree that the whole unlock system probably lent some longevity and much-needed variety to a very static TF2 experience.

HOWEVER.

2) It went way, way too far. The game you play now has almost nothing to do with vanilla TF2, aside from having 9 classes and... maybe Dustbowl.

If variety was needed, it could have been better accomplished by releasing quality maps or even TASTEFUL, fitting skins, with some VERY well thought out unlocks.

But what they did was to upset the exquisite balance of vanilla TF2 and then add insult to injury by crapping all over the art style of the game, beginning primarily with the halo hat.
