I have no plans on installing 64bit. I plan on taking out 2 gigs of ram, putting in a athlon x2 thanks to the suggestions here.
Big concern is heat and noise, I dont want to go higher than 65watts on cpu side. Its currently 45watts so not much of a difference there. But the triple core is 93 watts (or something close).
You think going to the 65watt amd cpu will mask these problems?
Just tried it with Hulu. Didn't notice any problems. There's a pause when switching to fullscreen but once video starts playing again, hardware acceleration is working just fine.
Did a couple more tests:
- Firefox 4.0/Flash 10.2.153.1 - Same behavior as 3.6.16. Need to rewind after switching to fullscreen to activate DXVA.
- Waterfox 4.0/Flash 10.3.162.28 64-bit (Beta) - Seamless. Hardware acceleration continues working even when switching between windowed and fullscreen.
The TDP values are for cooling. They're not necessarily the amount of power your CPU consumes. At idle, which your build should be for the most part, you're unlikely to see much difference in power consumption between the Sempron 140 and Athlon II X2. You're probably looking at just 5~10W tops.
By the way, do not confuse the Athlon II X2 with the earlier Athlon X2.
Athlon X2 7xxx = Kuma - first-gen Phenom-based, high power consumption
Athlon X2 4/5/6xxx = either Brisbane or Windsor - slower than Kuma or Regor, power consumption in between
Athlon II X2 = Regor - lowest power consumption among the 3, around Wolfdale level performance
