Portal 2...for kids?

I have seen a few posts about this on other blogs/forums.

Mostly it was someone trolling about how the game is rated E10+

I am not really worried about the rating as much as I am about the Commercial I just watched on TV last night.

Video Here

Now I am all for being wrong about a game I was iffy about getting anyway.

I played Portal at midnight release. I was finished in less than 6 hours. (Never played again) I was happy with the game play and I loved the story.

IIRC (Which I am pretty sure I do)

-This game was very dark and was kind of like a suspense thriller at times

-The main character is a prisoner meant for experiments

-There are tons of smeared words on the wall written in blood with cryptic sayings of "The cake is a lie" all OVER!

-Pretty tough puzzle game at times.

I would say this game is not for children at all

I had the same expectations for Portal 2...

but after seeing this ad, I have come to the assumption that it is being targeted at kids?

I mean its not parappa the rappa...you have turrets shooting at you and blood and fighting a big huge crazy robot that tries to kill you with poison gas at the end.

Again I want to be wrong...

Honestly is Portal 2 going to be "kiddie"

It sure seems that way after watching this ad, and wow does this ad come on a lot. -_-

Maybe its supposed to be a joke...I want to know.

It isn't a kiddie game, no. The robot players are actually just for coop play. You still play as the same main character from Portal 1 in the singleplayer.

Expect the same atmosphere, gameplay, and humor from the first game - just better.

I think that was showing how quirky and innocent the robots are until GLaDOS forces them into the test chambers.

Portal 1 was pretty light hearted though, so if a kid wants to play portal i'd encourage it. Better portal than stupid call of duty all day long.

What happen to the girl you use in portal 1. Did she die at the end?

No, she got drug back into the facility, as was shown at the end of Portal 1. You play as her in Portal 2 as well. The robots are just a duo meant for the coop campaign, which is separate from the singleplayer.

I'm pretty sure that's just to keep it G rated for TV commercials. It shows the main point of the game while not being overly revealing, getting through obstacles using portal guns.

I don't see how this is child like at all. Just a non-gory commercial.

I just hope it isn't gimped too much by the E rating.

I dont think the first Portal was very dark, in fact I found it to be very lighthearted and funny. The computer monitors scrolling cake ingredients, Glados's hilarious rantings, the little radios playing salsa music, etc.
I dont think there was anything about it that should be disturbing to children.
Its dark in the same way that nursery rhymes and bedtimes stories are dark because they have some disturbing aspects when interpreted that way, but for the most part it is not obvious.

Thats the modified ending, they did a patch recently because of portal 2. Originally you just laid on the ground and faded to black, It seemed pretty much like she had died.

Well if that is true...I question why they would target that ad so heavily at kids, if that is not the game they will be playing...

I know it is kind of like when you watch a movie trailer and something is said or something happens and its funny as hell...

You go see this movie...that part is not even in the film.

To me though, showing Portal 2 ads that look like unicorns and happy fun time.

Then the game being like the original is superior false advertising and just like the cake. (YEAH! I went there)

I guess we can just expect some pretty P/O parents.

Anyway that is just my opinion. probably put this purchase on the back burner for Duke Nukem instead.

Again, I only played it once...and was finished at 6AM that same night it came out. So my memory could be off a bit.

and old bedtimes stores and fairy tales are actually much more graphic and not intended for children in their pure undisnified form.

Portal and hopefully portal 2 is like the CUBE movies...people are being held against their will and forced to figure out these puzzles with this experimental device.

I know a child would not put these kinds of things together, they would be too enthralled by "Look I can make oval and then go thru to the other oval"

I'm just saying the underlying reality is there. The fact that no child will pick up on it is a very gross assumption.

to get back to a less concerned aspect, I just don't want these darn kids ruining a game I love...
