What to do...What to do

Thread Starter
Hey guys I have a dilemma here and I would like to get some input from the OCN members..I am thinking about updating my gpu..I am currently running a single Sapphire Toxic 5850, which I really like...I have came up with a few options and want to see what you guys think the best path to go is..It will be running on my sig rig with two monitors my Dell U2410(primary monitor) and my Viewsonic....I was going to sli 570's at first but I really don't feel like dealing with the vram issues..I really want to go with something like twin frozr II or III...My Toxic ruined me with how quiet and good it cools...So, with the said here is what I am thinking:

1) Get a twin Frozr III 6950 then in a few months buy another one to xfire it. I realize that I can't flash the bios on a non reference card but I am ok with that. I will definitely oc it.

2) Get a 6970 Lightening then xfire down the road. Is the 6970 really worth the extra $100 though? Once again it will get oc'ed.

3) Get another 5850 and just xfire it with my Toxic. I know there are scaling problems with the 5000 series in xfire but is it really that bad? If it is I will stay away from this idea all together. This is the cheapest route to go. If I go this route I would wait for the 28 nm cards to come out later on this year.

I used MSI cards for a reference for the three different scenarios , they don't have to be MSI's. I thank you guys in advance and if you have any other thoughts or suggestions let me know.

1. Although you don't have the dual bios option you still should be able to unlock it. do this.
2. Don't do it, not worth it
3. It really is that bad.

I don't think the third option is really bad...
What wouldn't you be able to run at 60 FPS with those cards?
For me, depending on the resolution, Xfiring 6970s or 6950s is just overkill

Grab a second 5850. They scale well enough maybe not as great as the 6k series but very very well.

better than the 4k series. I got a reference 5850 for 140. They are really cheap now. I also didn't see much more than a 10 to 20% performace increase in the 6k serise so I would stick with the 5k for now.

The twin frozr's are cool and quiet, but they tend to get hot in some xfire setups since they don't exhaust out the back.
