Why not to trust TomsHardware (for PSUs at least) - Page 7

It's just like Rodney Reynolds (3DGameMan). His reviews used to be straight up, honest, and pretty thorough (not sure about PSU's, but on cases they were). I've watched more recent reviews of his lately and all I hear is "100% Kickass Case!" Makes me sick when a case with so many drawbacks get 100% from him. he's gone the way of the darkside too... Or he's just lost his mind.

Either way, thanks for posting this. it's good info.

Oh, and what's with all the godamn ads at Tom's? There isn't an inch on the screen that doesn't have some kind of advertisement...
Yeah, I remember you and I having a brief exchange about Rodney Reynolds. Honestly, every review of his I've seen is either "a great product" a "kickass product" and (mostly) a "100% kickass product" - that's ridiculous. Not every product on the market is, at minimum, "a great product." In fact, quite a few computer hardware products are "absolute trash."

He is thorough with cases though. "And unfortunately.."

Not mentioning this (like TomsHW does) and acting as if it is "your equipment" just makes them look ridiculous when found out and all their hours of testing work turned doubtful
I think they even refer to the testing facility as "in our labs."

Of course Rodney isn't going to badmouth a product that they give him for free to play around with. If he does, I'm sure they'll stop supplying him with them. Remember, he gets the product, reviews, plays, then sends back.

I'm sure some other sites buy some of their products instead, so they can have a more fair review.

And say what you want about Rodney's final conclusion, his videos are pretty well done and give me a good idea of what's in the case, certain angles, size, etc.

Then he's not very useful as an objective reviewer, now is he? You have to be critical and honest. If it's junk, it's junk. Integrity.

I can't believe you're defending him with this particular line of thinking. Do you not understand journalism and ethics?

OC3D bad mouthed the Corsair cases, and they are still receiving new ones. Either you can take criticism or you can't.

Did I say "I agree with his every statement and final conclusion because I think he's a world class reviewer and gives an honest opinion"? No, I didn't.

Maybe he doesn't wanna give an honest opinion, whatever. At least he's getting free products to toy around and play with. You aren't, nor am I.

For his techniques for reviews on the product, it's a matter of opinion. I find it better to watch a video review with someone talking about certain features than reading about it. It's up to me to determine whether or not the case fits my needs or is a "great" or "kick-ass" product. I make that judgement based on what I see and hear.

Do you not understand that people are entitled to their own opinions?

Do you not understand reviews are only useful if the reviewer is honest with his viewers/readers? Do you honestly think reviewing is just "about getting free stuff, lolz"

A review can be helpful even if it's not honest. If you disagree with what the person is saying, then turn off the audio. Look at the dimensions, check out the different camera angles to see different parts of the case, and turn the audio back on when he tests the stock fans.

You sure do have a hard-on for ethics don't you? I don't agree with what you say so you think I have no knowledge about reviewing and journalism. That's quite a silly statement.

And yes, in some instances I do think reviewing is about "getting free stuff". This guy isn't working for some big corporation for reviews, he's doing it out of his house. He doesn't have some goon over his shoulder watching every move he makes, nor does he have to report absolutely EVERYTHING.

Quit taking things out of context. Wanna see an example of a review not being honest yet still helpful? The mentioned TomsHardware review. It's not honest, and is helpful so that we know not to trust them anymore.

power supply review = johnny guru or hardware secrets only.
Once manufacturers start supplying reviews with test samples or products, you can be sure as hell that there's some bias. Why? It's simple: They get the product for nothing, which already makes it seem good. Maybe not consciously but subconsciously. Already there's a major difference between him and us. He gets the product for free to review it and send it back, and we pay for it to use in our machines.

The only way you'll get honest reviews is by a third party having their own testing equipment and buying the product with their own money. It's the only real way.
Consumer Reports has followed that philosophy for a long time. All the stuff they test, they buy themselves.
