The ATI drivers will not load. The install program exits after clicking on the "Install" button (it also exits on the "Uninstall button") - after selecting the language.

History:
I have i7 920, Win7 64 bit, Radeon HD6950 from XFX, 650w SLI ready PSU, 6Gb RAM. The previous card ran fine, Radeon 4650.

I uninstalled the ATI drivers using Microsoft's uninstall program, removed the 4650, installed the 6950 (plugging in the two 6 pin power cords and seating the card well), rebooted and found that Device Manager did not see the card, there was a "VGA card" in "Other devices" but no Display Device entry for the 6950 card. Upon running the ATI 11.5 install program, it exited after clicking on "Install" button. I tried 11.4, same problem. I tried just the driver, not the bundle, same problem. Each time a message from Microsoft came up saying the program did not install correctly.

I then followed the instructions for deleting all ATI/AMD folders and modifying the registry as instructed in this thread, rebooting and then rerunning 11.5 ATI bundle. Same problem, same exit point. Tried 11.4, bundle and just the driver, same problem.

Out of having nothing else to do, I looked in "Other devices" and found the VGA device and clicked on "Update driver" and lo and behold, the driver for 6950 was installed! I ran a benchmark and it's operating in accelerated mode. The driver is digitally signed by Microsoft, not ATI but the driver description is "ATI 8.850.0,0, dated 4/19/2011" It now appears in Device Manager under "Display adapter" and correctly labeled "AMD Radeon HD 6900 Series", it did not appear there before loading the Microsoft drivers.

I then tried to installed 11.5 bundle from ATI but still got the same error message, it quits after clicking on the "Install" button. I once again went through the deletion procedures in the first post of this thread and again tried to load 11.5 and again got the same result. I also tried 11.4, same result.

At least the card is now working with a driver that takes advantage of the acceleration mode but I'm not sure the full capability of the card is being used by the Microsoft signed driver. I would like to load the ATI bundle but I can't get past the error after clicking on "Install".

Any ideas on this strange problem?

Reformat and do a fresh install of the latest drivers from ATI for your card.

Well, that may be the only way to get everything to work but I was hoping for a less stressful approach.

Thanks, Bob

Hi,

I tried your method of uninstalling ATI drivers but I'm still encountering a problem I have with updating my drivers. The error message that I get is, "No AMD graphics driver installed, or the AMD driver is not functioning properly. Please install the AMD driver appropriate for your AMD hardware."

The only driver that I can use is the one from the CD that came with the video card.

Do you have any suggestions or ideas? Thanks.

Hmmm, everything is ok now after installing the previous driver release version 11.4. Tried to install Ver11.5 several times without success. Anyhow, Ver11.4 should be better than my previous drivers Ver10.12.

Either go to the company that made the card eg sapphire and check their website for drivers. If it refers you to AMD, just reformat the PC and install the very latest from AMD.

That usually appears when you have removed the AMD display drivers completely (only MS VGA driver left) and have not removed CCC services correctly (its searching for non-existent display drivers). You need to uninstall CCC and reinstall them again. If you wanted to use this method.

Thanks. You know what Sapphire told me? To wait for the next driver release and check if the problem will occur again. headscratch.gif

Sorry for the noob question, but what is CCC?

Thanks.
