gtx580 or 6950/6970? - Page 2

580 is obviously better. Question should be, are you willing to pay for it?

Im not Nvidia Fanboy, but if you are not worried about price, GTX580 is a very strong single card solution. Xfire 6970s start to shine in certain games. Xfire Scaling is very good this time around in the 6XXX series.

Here's some things to think about. A 6970 has a 6/8 pin whereas a 6950 has a 6/6 pin connector. A 6970 is more capable of higher voltage and over clock than a 6950. A 6950 cannot reach the performance of an over clocked 6970 regardless of what some might say. If you do unlock a 6950 make sure it's the 2GB version. The 1GB 6950 do not. Flashing the BIOS also voids the warranty if the card burns out before you can get it back to original BIOS. If it burns out you can't get it too late to revert it. IF you want a 6970 performance I'd get that over the 6950.

Read this thread on OCNThe 6950 to 6970 unlock thread and this one off ITShoutOut.com Turn your Radeon 6950 into a Radeon 6970 to familiarize yourself before you go this route just to have hind sight of what to expect.

Now for the other side of the coin. The AMD 6970 is a bit better than a GTX 570 and much more comparable in performance. The GTX 570 is about 15% less performance than a GTX 580 at about 70% of the cost. Also a good choice for price per performance. I'd concur that the GTX 580 is a bit over priced, but if you want the best single card period the GTX 580 is the card for single card solution. However with your current CPU it may be too much and you will bottle neck it.

If your going to upgrade the CPU eventually than the 6970 or 570 will be a good choice in my own opinion.

A lot to think about but you should choose what you feel best suits your needs or what suits your budget to your needs. Which ever is more important to you. Read the threads and reviews online to get some insight first before making up your own mind.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580 Video Card Performance
AMD Radeon HD 6970 Video Card
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570 Video Card Performance
PowerColor AX6950 PCS++ Video Card
NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 560 Ti

Good luck and let us know what you ended up doing. Always curious on the outcome. All the cards are good cards and can play todays games without any problem.

u have received good rep thanks

ok so as for a response to what you said, I CAN ONLY run one video card so a single card shall be my choice. I am willing to pay for the gtx580 BUT i am also willing to pay for the 2gb 6950 and possibly turning it into a 6970 or just buying the 6970 and leaving it that way.

i am also considering overclocking my cpu speed to 4.0ghz BUT isnt my 3.4ghz already pretty good for my setup???

so lets just say i wanted to stick with my 3.4ghz cpu and just update my video card, u really think the 580 would not work right????

More CPU speed would help, but a Quad at 3.4Ghz is fine for these cards.

Get HD 6950, Unlock and save 200$. With that money get a New MB and DDR3 RAM. You sadly cant OC with your current MB because it has only 4 VRMs and no cooling. I have both GTX580 adn HD 6950 and HD 6950 is best for you. The extra performance GTX580 will not even show that much with a AMD setup.

You can move your Phenom onto your new board, just make sure it's socket AM3. Althought I'd just wait for Bulldozer and buy new RAM with it if you're short on money.

Your RAM is OK I guess, if anything; I'd get a new monitor.

hd6950 2gb has some features locked,we can unlock those features with a bios flash,
unlocking will make it like a hd6970,
but remember, only 2gb model of hd6950 can be unlocked,1gb moel wont,
get hd6950 2gb,unlock it to a hd6970,
infact u can buy 2x hd6950 for the same price of a single gtx580,
2x hd6950 (unlocked to hd6970) will double the performence of gtx580 for the same price.
Hope this helps
