Build Upgrade - VFX Artist - Film/Television

Thread Starter
This is my first thread on this site. I figure if any group could sort through my build and steer me right it would be you guys, so here goes.

I work in visual effects and design artwork for film and television. My current computer has served me well, but I work with some large Maya files, massive composites (Nuke, After Effects) as well as the peripheral programs that accompany the processes such as Photoshop, camera tracking softwares (Boujou, PFTrack), and video editing programs. I also work for fun in music production using Abelton and Cubase. Most studios I work for offer a decent render farm for batch images so what I am really looking for is just an upgraded version of my current setup to allow me to work more efficiently.

Current system:

XP 32/64 dual boot
Intel Q6600
EVGA 680i Motherboard
8GB Corsair Dominator (don't have latency or speed on hand)
2x EVGA GTX 8800 SLI
4 TB of internal Drive space
1000W Corsair PSU

The new system I am looking to build:

Windows 7 Ultimate
Intel Core i7 970 3.2GHz
EVGA 170-BL-E762-A1 LGA 1366 Intel X58
24GB Corsair Dominator 6x4GB DDR3 1600
2x EVGA GTX 580 SLI
1200W Corsair PSU Modular
200GB OCZ Vertex (boot drive)
Cooler Master (Tank Case) Full ATX

I don't plan on mounting the RAM fan. I think the case will generate enough airflow. To be honest I'm not thrilled about the case. No offense to you gamers out there but this looks like an armored vehicle from Halo or something. It seems to have plenty of space inside and I like the positioning of the ports on top, plus the amount and size of the fans was a factor in my choice. My only debate at this point is whether to wait for the Bulldozer series from AMD and go with 12-16 core processor rather than the 6 core i7. For the renders that I will do, even with that much computing power (if I waited for AMD) I would likely need more RAM to balance the data. Someone here I'm sure has the answer but if AMD is still dual channel RAM then 1GB of RAM per core will not do me any good at render time.
I've also looked at the Quadro FX5600 over the two GTX580. I don't play computer games, but I am reluctant to purchase such an expensive piece of equipment without a firm grasp on its performance advantages (even after reading their PDF Quadro vs GeForce). I've worked with the Quadro series at several studios, they've been great, but I've also worked with the GTX8800 SLI for several years with my own station that have been wonderful. Maybe I just feel comfortable with what I know. I was told to look at the GTX480's as well, they are about 150$ cheaper and most of the specifications mirror the 580. The heat problem worries me though.

To be honest I'm not sure why I am bothering all of you nice people with my build; especially after seeing how ridiculous you all have gotten with your own computers. Liquid Nitrogen.. really!? I guess I want to lay it out for the pro's here who may have some insight into the decisions on the parts based on what I do.

I appreciate your help or advice.

Yea man stepping up to an i7 will give you a considerable boost! Only thing I am wondering is if the 580s is worth the extra $$ over a pair of 480s

Where's all the Intel/nvidia guys at??? We got a guy here with $$ burning a hole in his pocket!!

Dude you should roll with a GTX 590. Dual GPU card that will save you space and prolly a little heat. Will also be easier to go quad SLi down the road!!

You're probably right on the 590. I could buy one of those right now and save about $300, then grab another when the price drops a bit.

The benchmarks on the 590 are incredible! Went toe-to-toe with the Radeon HD6990 and would be arguably better than a 580 SLI. I'm an Nvidia guy so I'd get the 590 over the 6990. Only by preference though.

Thanks for the heads up.

I wouldn't recommend anyone getting a 590 unless they have extremely sufficient cooling in their case, because a ton of 590s are just burning themselves out right now.

Good point. I am not overclocking or liquid cooling this system. I was relying on the space and fan placement of the CM HAF X to keep the innards at a reasonable level. It doesn't look like there is a back plate available for the 590 at the moment either which might help a little. It is supposed to be quieter than previous GTX's though. We'll see when I max out the fan speeds though.

Do you think one 590 will run hotter than 2 580's though?

I was planning to mount a Zalman 120mm on the CPU. I think there should be enough room.

Yeah looks nice: AE needs massiv RAM for longer RAM-previews and my comps 12+GB need to render.
And the 6cores will do some nice job.
I don`t know about nuke but AE uses the graphic card (likes nvidia better) for openGL rendering for some effects. It will speed up render times also.
So this yould be the rig what i want for my work
Go buy it!
Edit don`t forget a nice CPU cooler!

AE is probably the single most inefficient program I've ever used. Nuke is brilliant!
