Windows 7, hands down. When XP came out, it brought out new stability and features that were unprecedented. Windows 7 is what XP represented, with more eye candy, more support, and more features.

For older computers I want to revive for testing random things out (dedicated firewall anyone?), I generally use a Linux distro.

Windows 7, set to Windows Classic Theme. Aero is a waste of system resources for a little glitter. (I do leave aero enabled on my HTPC though) Did you disable aero when you tried 7? It does eat into vram and gpu usage.

Why I like 7 over xp is it takes advantage of modern hardware. Namely it's memory management and pre-caching and optimizations. On any system with under 4 GB of ram though, XP is still king.

However, I do not like the way W7 DRM was handled. We all know that can be fixed but regardless I do NOT like software being locked to my hardware.
AMD, I give up.

Honestly, I am not fond of 9 our of 10 features that are added to each successive release of Windows.

I do enjoy the platform being updated to support newer hardware better, but I hate the fact that they use this as an excuse to justify massive amounts of bloat.

There is really little reason for an OS to take up more than a few hundred megs of disk space or more than a few dozen megs of RAM. Even with 5TB of the former and 24GiB of the latter, I have vastly better things to do with my resources than powering Window's fluff.

As far as OS feel and usability, Windows 98SE, NT 4.0, and 2000 were the high points for me.

Multi-core support, 64-bitness, and DX10/11 are the only reasons I'm not still using Windows 2000.

XP, I'm more used to it, and it works just fine, most of the softwares and hardware being released NOW, 10 years later, works perfectly fine, normally with the same performance as in 7, and in many cases better... when they released Windows XP, it was the time when the "home" version of Windows was finally mature enough, and from there on the improvements became less important in my view... I started using Windows in the 3.1 version (very briefly) and used the not so great 9x for many years, until the 2k and XP,

obviously DX9 only, and less than 4gb, no x64 support (XP 64 cannot be considered XP when it's based on 2003) are becoming more and more a limitation, but this is not a huge deal right now, also the UI suffers a bit sure, aero makes things so smooth in my slow 60hz screen and the search bar thing is excellent, but anyway... for me UAC is useless, but for some users also is good

Windows 7 is clearly the way of the future, more support for modern graphics, ssds, 64bit runs flawlessly, blah blah blah. It's really nice from a technical standpoint.

From a user standpoint, it's annoying just like windows vista. I'm locked out of my own folders, I have to take some circumlocutous path to open some specific places, it's a pain to freely edit files in locations, and at the benefit of being just as vulnerable to malicious software as I was on XP, with a harder time correcting it.

So, they're both microsoft products I guess in the end

Windows 7 has been hands down the experience I have ever had on a PC. I was an Apple fan back in the days of OS 7-9 and those were great operating systems and moving to XP was a HUGE drag, but I wanted to play more games. Vista was a bloated bump in the road, but with a powerful computer after SP1 it was a competent OS. Going to Windows 7 was like a dream come true. Fast, responsive, great UI, good ease of use, powerful, no crashing without a service pack and feature rich. This has been the best OS experience that I have had and that is saying a lot since I have used a lot of OSes.

I can easily say "Windows 7 FTW".

To all of you people using the ancient XP what the heck is wrong with you guys? Don't you want the best user experience possible and on top of that be able to actually take advantage of multi-core processors your graphics cards? I just don't get it.
