I thought that Windows 7 was so awesome users weren't even allowed to post this crap anymore?

Bottom line - Windows 7 on all machines. Then use Tiny 7 on old machines that you think you want to run XP on. Test it. It will FLOOR STOMP Windows XP even on a single core with 1GB RAM. Apps will open 2-4 times faster on it then on XP.

I loved XP back in the day. The problem is now, I have installed windows 7 on a Pentium 4 pc and it ran great! So 7 runs fine on new and old(ish) hardware.

There is one case where having Windows XP on a Pentium 4 will help with gaming - if you have a soundcard with hardware acceleration (an Audigy 2 or 4, for example) you can gain anywhere from 2 to 4 fps. Windows Vista and 7 don't have hardware acceleration for sound processing.

Vista and 7 have been worth it if only for the sole reason of 64 bit support, that alone makes up for any of the new headaches, and any other improvements are just bonus.

Being stuck with no more than 4GB of ram for XP is such a drag, the OS simply cannot handle a modern workload. Sure, there was a 64 bit version of XP but that was a drag and didn't even come close to having the support needed to be seriously considered.

I've never had an issue with XP and CPUs with more than two cores.

Again, with how big it is. What is 30g when the smallest hdd most people are picking up are 500gb?
Waste is still waste.

I've never noticed a difference in application start time between any Windows NT based OS.

You shouldn't have any issues with them per-say, but XP does not know how to handle 3+ cores correctly so the workload is not distributed correctly and you don't get the full power of your multi-core processor working for you. I remember reading all about it when quad cores first came out. ALso the newer instruction sets that modern quad cores have aren't fully supported in XP, so again lost power and efficiency.

XP is old and dead. 32 bit is old and dying.

It is like using one of those 1980s cell phones that are the size of a home telephone with a huge antenna. It works, but there is so much better out there...

I overall prefer 7.

Dunno if it's been mentioned in this thread because I haven't had time to read through it all but it might be worth another mention.

There is an ongoing project to fix annoyances and return many of the features of XP that were removed from Win7 (and Vista). It's called Classic Shell:

http://classicshell.sourceforge.net/

Free. Up to Ver3.1 now. 64bit too. Also for Server 2008, 2008 R2.

Cheers.
