[Engadget]Ad-Supported Kindle to Ship May 3rd ; $25 off Retail - Page 5

I think the Kindle is a great device, but only $25 savings? I'd sooner pay the extra $25 for the non-ad version. TBH, a one-time savings of $25 does not justify ads on the device permanently (though to be fair, it doesn't appear that the ads are all that obtrusive). I think it would be more interesting if they had an ad-supported 3G version that was only, like, $10 more than the non-3G version. I imagine that might be a bit easier to sell (though probably not much support from the 3G provider(s)). And you could also have interactive ads that have links you could click on if you wanted to see more (and would generate actual traffic to the ad's related online material, since you'd have the (rather limited) 3G access on the Kindle itself). That would make more sense to me. But the ad-related revenue would probably go to the 3G provider(s) rather than Kindle.

I do like the idea of cheaper, ad-supported devices, but $25 is nowhere near the amount I'd settle for. I mean, I'll have to look at these ads for as long as I own and use the device. There's no way I'd take this over the full retail product. $100 is more in the ball park that I think is fair.

I can't see someone being alright with ads just to save a measly $25. That isn't much incentive IMO.
