I agree that a better DAC can be had for the price, but can a better DAC and Amp be had for that price? I don't think so.

Some of the external DACs still have built in amplifiers. Will they be as good as the Tube Magic's probably not, but having a nicer DAC with lower impedance headphones goes a lot farther imo than a lower quality DAC with a better amp that drives higher impedance headphones.

Still, it's really up to the person to decide the for themselves. Maybe they like to be able to drive higher imp. headphones.

I was actually referring to the op-amp in the DAC section of the D1. There are actually two swappable ICs.

So we can probably conclude that I did not spend enough time researching the best bang for buck DAC, but however, I am pleased with my purchase and looking forward to testing different op-amps and tubes as well as enlarging my collection of Hi-Fi audio equipment in the future. As for now, I'm just a poor student.

I'm in the same category as well. I will probably get the D1 myself one of these days, as I think the DAC will be good enough for my listening and I would rather be able to drive high-impedance cans with ease. I don't think it was a waste of money at all.

My next goal is exactly that, high-impedance cans.

Which ones are you looking at? I would love to upgrade to a pair of beyer dt990 600-ohms.

It really depends on how you planning on using it. The amount of features that come with the D1 are very useful to me. I run a dedicated speaker setup and a dedicated headphone setup all at the same time. And if I wanted to purchase a turntable I wouldn't need to purchase a pre-amp.

I had been eying the Beyer DT880 600 Ohms, I also would like to use them as a headphone monitor when I record myself attempting to create music. (Thus I'm pretty much only looking at semi-open cans instead of open cans) My HD 555's are terrible for this purpose.

Well, as soon as my stuff from monoprice arrives I will be using them as a dedicated speaker setup and probably hook up my mixer to it also. So, win win?
