How badly does my cpu bottleneck my gpu? - Page 15

After reading like 90% of this thread i'll have to post my P scores, and i'll have to agree with some people here saying that 965 is bottlenecking 5xx gpus, but its hardly bottlnecking them so hard that it needs to be replaced or even replaced with SB. 965 is just what 99% of GPUs need, decent cpu, i was more than happy to have it in my rig

Here is what I got with their settings at the lower two reses.

Another interesting tidbit from that review are these results:

It seems it went from not bad at all to epic fail in the span of the few seconds it took to load another game up.
Yes Balla, it did tank on f1. Right after that it bounced back and stayed competitive in every other game. They even said it bounced back in f1 if they disabled 2 cores. Why are you selectively using the worst part of the whole article to make Phenom 2 look bad?

I agree completely !
A Phenom II x4 hardly bottlenecks the GPU's unless they are very, very high end. No point overlooking it.
WoW Cataclysm is a different story. But it's unique too.

I won't upgrade my system until I can't sustain 30fps. So years.

The OP asked how badly his bottleneck is, it's not bad. If anything it's non-existent.

Because it was a small article and that was part of the "good". Perhaps taking the good with the bad and not parading around as if the Phenom II chips are without issue would cause less people like myself coming around trying to point out the holes?

I would say since I've never seen a Phenom II beat a i5/i7 in any gaming benchmark then the Phenom II is constantly bottlenecking.

We've already seen two low/mid end gpus get bottlenecked in this thread by over 50% on a Phenom II.

There are people who are ok with lower min fps, and just want to use one card. And for those people a cheap build with an x4 or x2 and a 2011 mid/low gpu would be more than enough. Then there are other people who when they purchase a new platform in 2010/2011 they want to be able to get the most out of it now, because later its probably only going to get worse.

Which actually puts the Phenom II x6 in a unique place as I feel over time when more programs start to use the extra cores it has it will make a comeback from the grave. This time next year we could have debates over Phenom II x6 vs Bulldozer x4 where the Phenom II is winning.

@purpleannex

Upgrade when you feel you need to, also I've only had SLI for about 2 weeks (first time) and I've run into SLI issues with Crysis 2 and AssCreedBrother. Solving both issues was as simple as importing the correct SLI info and away I went.

Since most games are console ports it usually doesn't matter, Intels C2D architecture came out in 2007 and though it clearly was improved the base still existed and even those chips are just as capable as Phenom II in modern gaming.

The i5-2500k is pretty fun, who wouldn't like to run four fast cores at 5.3GHz? I know I do. But thats not its only benefit, it also uses a lot less power. I actually found myself turning on TPU and EPU then using the OC Gene to hit 4.4GHz and leaving it there because I really don't need anymore power than that. Whereas coming from a Phenom II chip I had that thing balls to the wall 24/7 and even with a single card, and even then I knew despite my conviction for AMD it was holding me back. Each person is different and what they want is different as well. I had just built my first system in a long time after using laptops and started out with a Regor 245, tried the 555, tried a 965, tried a 1090T and loved it. After upgrading my 9800GT to a 470 I started to have my doubts though, and with the desire to go SLI I knew I personally needed to make a platform shift if I was going to do that. Lucky my DDR2 board died right as Sandy Bridge was coming out, I quickly sold the ram and cpu and ended up making out paying $10 for the DDR3 upgrade and nothing for going from a 1090T to a i5-2500k.
