I'm thinking the fan won't be as loud as the reference cooler.

If you want non reference cooling but still unlock, go with the Twin Frozr III.

I don't really care about unlocking, just overclocking, since from what I've heard a good overclock puts it on par with a stock 6970, which is all the performance I really need.

true, but a reference 6950 has more chance to have the same memory chips as the 6970.

the reference cooler is actually a fairly good quality. best stock sink i've seen. the loudness comes from the blower that blows half the air out.

I think if you get an after market cooler like... cooler. The reviews on Newegg sound it really good. ($30 cheaper on mwave)

Means your chances of unlocking are at 99% with a reference card and low with a non-ref one.

Why would you pay $250 for a 6950 that won't unlock when you can pay the same price and net yourself a $350 card?

i mean you have a better chance to hit the memory speeds of the 6970 with a reference 6950.

on reference cards, the memory is the same voltage according to this source.

http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=138562

as to why everybody and their mama always says the 6950 uses memory .1 volts below 6970 memory is anybody's guess. once 1 person says something on a site, everybody follows and repeats that same rubbish everywhere else.

most reference 6950 cards have been able to hit 1375 memory speeds. once non-reference cards come into play, partners will only be responsible to run speeds rated at 1250, which means they'll run slower memory or run the voltage lower.

but more importantly, pcb designs and memory controller is a bigger factor than which memory chips you're running. the ref 6950 uses the same controller and design as the 6970. once partners change that design for more "efficiency" out goes the 1375 mem speeds.

Well, I don't know quite frankly. I have just never used a GPU with the type of fan that the 6950 has before so I'm kind of worried about how loud it will be.
