Noob OC Question

Thread Starter
I'm new to overclocking, and I'm trying to figure out the best way to tweak my rig to get the best performance out of it. So far I've only played with my CPU multiplier, but I wonder if I'm getting any bottlenecks. With the low temps I'm getting it seems like I should be able to push the CPU even farther, or am I wrong? Any advice on how to proceed would be very much appreciated.

My system is as follows:

CPU: AMD Phenom X2 555
Mobo: Gigabyte 890FX-UD5
Cooling: Corsair H70
RAM: 2x4GB 1333 Corsair XMS3
GPU: Diamond Radeon HD 5770, stock cooling
OS: Windows 7 x64
Case: Corsair Obsidian 800D

CPU Multiplier: 20x
FSB: 200mhz
NB: 2ghz
Core Voltage: 1.4v
CPU Temp Idle: 12 degrees
CPU Temp Load: 24 degrees

Even a dual core, 24C seems very low for 4 GHz o.O. I have that processor and running 3.6 Ghz, 1.3 volts, 31C degrees. I have a hard time justifying anything past 3.8, and 4 is too much for me. You could keep going, but the next step might be your GPU or RAM. RAM is ab it more complicated though.

Edit: Also you should add your system specs to your sig here. Do you have a screenshot of the temps on load? And how are you getting it there?

I think the low temps are because my basement is freezing! Ambient down there is pretty low. I will post a screenshot of the temps there tomorrow. I've stressed the system using OCCT for the default 1hr test.

I run my backup rig with a x2 555 BE at 4013MHz (250 x 16) which still allows Cool & Quiet to save on the wear and tear. Plays COD and Black Ops with everything on high without any issues.

Give this thread a good going over to help learn the basics and than use the HTT (FSB is the Intel term) to open Ole Girl up!

Trying unlocking the 2 other cores on the chip if your mobo supports that feature.

Other than that just balance Vcore with Frequency, mess with the CPU-NB and FSB if your OCing RAM. It takes time and patience but the end result will be awesome.

Stress test with Prime 95 and OCCT.... I use both so its w/e..

Have fun and happy ocing bro.

So things today were a bit warmer than when I tested over the weekend, but 16c idle/27c load is about the same, and I really think ambient change is the reason for the difference.

I'm curious what your CPU Socket Temp is while testing! 55c max for stability reasons, and 62c according to AMD. Much over 55c is when you may start to have problems with the OC. The socket temp is read from a sensor with the bios unlike core temp which is calculated by a utility. Which would you rather trust? Looks like temp is fine, but just sharing this info as I/most always use the cpu socket temp to gauge by.
