Building custom AMD rig - NO/little experience

Thread Starter
hey all. this is obviously my first post on the boards, though I have been lurking and creeping around a bit. as the title states, I'm going to - hopefully soon, depending on my fiscal situation - build myself a computer primarily based around the CPU that I want. the most experience I have with this type of stuff is taking apart my friends xbox to fix Microsoft's ****ty rushed heatsink design. I might add that I also have quite limited knowledge when it comes to even the slightest intricacies; if you start talking about bus speed or cache, you may have to elaborate. enough with the bit of rambling. in short, i am asking for your guys advice on whether my parts are good but i also would like to learn so feel free to explain yourself thoroughly. if you feel like it of course.

i want to be able to play demanding games up to this point on at least medium settings with a solid frame rate. i.e. crysis on high not chugging, oblivion with mods running smoothly, etc. i also want to be able to multi task well, and have a fair number of relatively taxing processes or large programs running without a break in step.

so... right now i'm lookin at...

no idea about a case.

i'll probably be running winxp 64

oh, budget is not predetermined. decent performance is what i'm striving for.

IF you don't already have XP x64 DO NOT BUY IT

Why not save $20 and get this which will overclock great for $20 less
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103808

the 5850 is a great card but is no longer produced and probably won't be back in stock

Don't pay that much for a 500 gig WD Black drive

Get a Samsung f3 1tb for a little more

Might wanna get this CPU
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103808

Graphics card is out of stock and it's not a very great company.

No MSI motherboards if you plan to overclock
Get this if you don't mind open box or you could get the new one.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...2E16813131631R

Better RAM, Great mixture of RAM timings and frequency
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231303

Hard Drive, Much better deal, one of the fastest mechanical drives out there.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-185-_-Product

One of the most recommended cases out there
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811119216

And get a cpu cooler!
Hyper 212+ is a great value and you can overclock to ~3.8
Mugen 2 is great too.

What Resolution you play games at?

GOOD LUCK!

I'LL BE CONTINUOUSLY UPDATING THIS POST.

lol, it must have very recently gone out of stock. meh. what about a 5870?

resolution is 1280 x 1024. pretty old monitor but that doesn't bother me.

A GTX 460 1GB would do nicely...but once again what res to you play at?

PFFFTT a $100 HD 5770 would max out anything at that res!
And I'm very serious about that.
I have a monitor like that too (Don't mind either!) and my graphics card is a total overkill for this res.

Lots of people have it and it usually overclocks better and it holds most AMD overclocking records
You don't really need a 965 for gaming either.
Plus if you get a nice $40 cooler, you can get a "free" performance boost ~3.8Ghz

Also you might want to buy the $100 windows 7.
If you're a college student I believe it's $30
Seriously, most uptodate technology have no drivers on XP.

XP 32 bit is fine, but 64 bit was notorious for having lackluster driver support when XP was the flagship MS OS
