[H] $1000 showdown. 6990+6970 v 580 SLI *56k warning* - Page 5

If $1000 is the spending limit on GPUs in a build with only 2 cards, you would be a fool to not say 6990+6970 is better than 580 SLI in performance. Both are in the same form factor with 2 cards. Performance is performance.

Not possible unfortunately, better comparo would be triple sli 570 or better yet triple sli 580 vs 6990+6970. fail review imo too
I hope somebody will try that..

That's not really what was proven here. We see that 3x 6970 GPUs can beat 2x 580s. However as others have mentioned, it's very possible to get 3x 480s for that same price now. A triple 480 setup could be quite competitive here, until it hits the frame buffer wall.

This entire comparison seems pointless because the 580 is NOT a value-priced card. Even on Nvidia's side, SLI 460s can match it's performance for roughly half the cost. Most people purchasing a super high end card like that know what they are getting into though.

If you're buying a 580, it's not because it's competitively priced, it's because you're willing to pay the premium for the absolute fastest single gpu card on the market, with the most expansion potential down the line. If it's not worth it to you, there are plenty of other options.

I don't really see how this is a win/loss for either side.

This is all irrelevant. Again, it's an objective review based on a specific price-point - it's not based on your ability to throw disposable income at a retailer.

You seem to want a $1000 AMD vs $1500 Nvidia review, which for all intensive purposes would be a waste of time for anyone to create or read. It wouldn't help anyone make a purchase and would come to the same conclusion an idiot could make.

If it fits the price-point, it's a shame it's not included. Power-consumption aside it would likely be king.

Why is it 'fail'?

A review of 2vs2 would be as useful as the $1000 vs $1500 review I just described.

I am really glad articles like this come out. These two companies continue to compete and improve their products. Nvidia does need to bring more to the table for their price premium, in my opinion. And these sorts of comparisons will either cause Nvidia to improve their drivers, improve their hardware, and/or drop their prices to better reflect their performance compared to the competition.

That being said, I have three 580s waiting to be installed in my new build. Had price/performance been the deciding factor I would have gone with three 6970s, certainly. But I am definitely not representative of most consumers.

At least now you can account for the premium equally in quantity, it's no longer one way bias. That's all, now we have both, no bias, no fail, everyone is happy.

Ok guys lets make this fair, Quad-SLI vs Quadfire, with each side using two of their fastest cards.

GTX 590 x2 VS Radeon 6990 x2

Who would win?

How would there be no bias? One setup will cost significantly more than the other.
