[H] $1000 showdown. 6990+6970 v 580 SLI *56k warning* - Page 9

Hey, MSI! Do us a favor (well at least for the Lightning fans ) Release a 6990 Lightning or at least just a basic Twin Frozr III version. I prefer not to mix-match manufactured brands

There are a lot of ways to compare hardware. For example price vs price or total amount of gpu's/cpu's.This review compares price vs price,i really cant find any problem to this. Its not amd fault that hd6990+6970(1000usd) are better by far compared to gtx580 sli(1000).If you find something wrong to this correct me.

1000$ setup vs 1000$ setup eh..
This it really SHOULD have been Tri Sli 570s.. 1000$ for 3 gpus vs 1000$ for 3 gpus...

Also what v v v v v v v v v He said.

Am I the only one who noticed that a 6990+6970 =/= $1000? The cheapest 6990 I could find is $710 and the cheapest 6970 at $340. SLI GTX 580s is actually $1000. I agree with those saying that Tri 570s would be a better showing of nvidia's tech. Sorry if people have already said this. I didn't read through all 13 pages.

Tri SLI 570 can't even beat out triple 6950 according to tom's. i doubt tri 570 would actually fare better against 6990+6970.

it would certainly be "fair" for comparing relative price and the exact number of GPU's, but AMD would win that one too.
After almost reading for an hour on one thread, I thought I may as well make a contribution.

First of all, I'd imagine the 6990 & 6970 to be pretty damn hot & loud which is one of the things I look for in a card. Secondly, these cards have more VRAM than the GTX 580's, and as someone has previously stated, the GTX 580 3gb is out (which I have, the Gainward Phantom), thus making SLI Gainward GTX 580's a more accurate comparison.

I would also say that this is a correlation, not just a comparison, as it involves price/performance, and there is a definite strong correlation between the two results, that points towards the GTX 580's needing more VRAM for higher resolutions.

As people have already said, the drivers are awful for AMD, but how if they're managing to play all these games, faster than nvidia? If the drivers are so bad then how is this even happening?

I agree, the drivers are bad, but obviously not for all these games, and to be brutally honest, half of those games work better on AMD cards anyway, aside from Warhead, which NEEDS VRAM, it eats VRAM at those resolutions, so the higher VRAM card will WIN!

They would be on par with SLI 3GB GTX 580's, and if they're not, then I stand corrected and retract my statements, and I will sell my GTX 580, and get a 6990, lol.

I only have a 1920x1200 resolution monitor, and seriously, the GTX 580 STILL isn't good enough for my needs, 44fps avg on Crysis 2, 28-48 fps in Crysis 1, 28-44fps on Rift!

My 955 Black Edition is probably bottlenecking it, so until I get my new system I'm going to wait until I decide on keeping this card. I'm just so unimpressed, it was £467 for crying out loud, and I STILL can't run games over 60fps at 1920x1200, this is ridiculous.

I thought we were coming into the age of technology where graphics cards and components were getting too good for games... But no, that is not happening, in any way shape or form. I've spent £1200 in the last year on my computer shinanigins, already been through a GTX 470, which couldn't run everything I wanted it too. I spent £300 on cooling alone (just literally air cooling, fans for my H50, been through several), and my cooling was dreadful, I idle at 47c with my 955 and H50, and I idle at 33C with my GTX 580.

After what I have spent, I'm completely dissatisfied, computer parts were better for the money 4 years ago before the release of Crysis lol. My friend has a GTS 8800 320mb, and he still plays all games, and I'm no better off than he is with my GTX 580, just don't have any money left.

So this review, paired with my shortcomings... and severely overpriced components in the UK, I have to say something is wrong. Since when couldn't a £1200 PC slaughter games? Since when did £280 graphics cards struggle with getting even 30 fps on max settings?

Worlds gone mad, consumerism has messed our heads up, I just want to get rid of my PC now, I do want to build a new one, but if I don't get the results I want, then I'm selling it, and staying out the game for a bit until technology is actually worth the huge price tag!

Even for three of the latest AMD graphics cards to only be able to produce 28-40fps at that crazy resolution, to struggle to reach 60 fps is nuts for £1000. You guys may think that £1000 isn't really that much for a computer, but, I believe it is, considering you can get a whole system that would run anything (maybe not at max settings or on three monitors) at good FPS.

I'm completely confused with the way components are going, there are far too many in production, too many graphics cards to choose from, too many sticks of RAM, too many CPU's... The lists of components are endless, although how I love the variety and choice, I just completely dislike how for £25 per component more, I.E. £200-300 overall, you really don't notice the difference unless you're a nut like me, and then you realise it wasn't worth £300 more... for 10 fps... I feel like I've gone back in time, my old computer with an GTX 8800 768mb was FINE, I don't know why I sold it! I could run Crysis at almost the same FPS just a few lowered settings, and I couldn't tell the difference between them....

Maybe it's just me, but I am totally peeved.

Sorry for the rant, and this review was a good one, I just hope my GTX 580 lasts me longer than a year...

PLEASE RUN SKYRIM MAXED OUT!!! PLEASE, or I will ring up NVIDIA and verbally abuse them until they refund me, or make me my own range of graphics cards.

XD

Peace.

580 should slaughter Skyrim, as it is still a console port. not saying anything bad about it at all but the game is probably ot going to be that demanding.

Well at least it will look better than Oblivion, and if indeed it does allow for modding, I'm assuming texture packs and increased foliage wouldn't be to hard to apply.

Its kinda funny how people are about to kill each other over a review. There is very little difference in the avg. fps when adding the 5 games, its less than 4 fps. You can also get a Sparkle GTX 580 now days for $450 at Newegg. At the end of the day its all up to the buyer getting what they like to have for their setup. At this price range is all about what I want not what can I afford.

That makes no sense. How can you say @ $1000 it about what you want. The Want factor is limitless and no budget can fulfill. Quad SLI GTX 580 3GB Watercooled can easy go for $3000.
