GTX 460 or HD 5850? - Page 4

lol at people bringing up driver issues.

I never had driver problems with ATI. When I switched to NVidia, I've had all sorts of driver problems. So by that logic, Nvidia makes ****ty drivers. Is that right? Certainly not.

Go with the 5850. It's more powerful.

I will not be doing SLI or CF, so its going to be a single card solution

That Sapphire at £98 has to be too good to be true, but I have to say I am happy with my current Sapphire card so it is tempting.

The budget HAS to stay at £160 as I'm not the one paying (parents... yeah, waiting for the rich kid comments but I raised the funds for my rig in the first place.)

I don't think the games I play support PhysX.

I won't be going CF for 2 reasons

1. my board isn't 2x 16 slots
2. PSU isn't strong enough. I'm happy as is. I won't need the power of SLI or CF.

Looks like the 5850 I think.
You don't need 16x-16x for CF. Actually optimal is 8x-8x, as difference is only felt with 2x Highest-end cards and 1x highest end CPU.

Single card, no overclocking, go for the 5850 over the 460. I have both and at stock, single card it just isn't a contest. Overclocked dual cards is different story.

Check prices on 5870's though, as here they can occasionally be had in the same price range as the 5850 and 460.

My HD 5850 did 1Ghz/1250Mhz. Almost all HD 5850 with voltage control could hit 1Ghz. Also dont see many GTX460s over 900Mhz so given that stock they are @ 675Mhz vs 725Mhz (50Mhz) difference a 100Mhz difference OCed is going to make the gap even bigger. I have also owned GTX470 @ 800Mhz and HD 5850 is a better card.

Seeing as your not paying, and want to stick near the budget:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...odid=GX-147-XF

Its an XFX 5870 for £150 - Basically just a better 5850, but with 188W TDP vs 151W of the 5850 (http://www.anandtech.com/show/2848).

However I'm pretty sure your PSU will ok (my overclocked 5850 (930mhz core/1250mhz mem) and a 4ghz C2D ran fine on my no-name 480W £17 budget PSU).

Stock performance increase can push an extra 25% over a 5850 =)

I'd deffo say 5850, but then I'm biased

I Just picked up a second reference 5850 for £97 on ebay to add to the one I've got, which could already play all current games at max settings no probs Now it's overkill, which is nice

One thumbs up for the 5850 here

Thread Starter
If a 5870 is available at that price NORMALLY (the normal price is £157), I'm sold. But aren't OCUK and XFX's customer service meant to be terrible?

Power draw for the system with 5870 according to a power calculator is recommended to be 463w with my current dual core.

When I upgrade to the 965 (based on worst case scenario of 140w) that changes to 532w. Too much for my PSU methinks.

My real worry is the power draw. I don't intend on a PSU upgrade any time soon.
