E6600 + AMD Radeon 6950 Question

Thread Starter
Hi, I just have a couple questions that I haven't been able to get answered from searching around on the net yet.

For starters this is my current build

Intel D975XBX2
E6600 OC'd @ 3.4Ghz
4gb RAM
Evga 8800GT OC'd @ 700/1744/1000 (2000 effective)
650W PC Power & Cooling PSU
Windows Vista Premium x64

I've been wanting to do a system upgrade for a while, the problem I'm having now is deciding between going with new MB/CPU/Memory or a new GPU. Also I play on either 1920x1200 or 1920x1080 depending on which screen I'm on.

Option 1

Not Sure on MB yet
AMD Phenom II 955 x4
4GB DD3/1800

I would use my 8800GT for a while with this set up.

Option 2

Current set up, replacing the 8800GT with the AMD Redeon 6950 then running that way for awhile.

So what I really want to know is, which is going to give me more of a performance upgrade? My gut tells me the GPU will but I'm also afraid that my E6600 won't let that card really shine. At the same time would the new processing power from the Phenom not matter with out a beefy GPU to back it up?

In the end I will have The Phenom II/AMD Radeon 6950 setup but there will be a decent amount of time in between upgrades. Say 6 months. Oh and I only game, no photo/video editing or 3d modeling.

I'm open to suggestion and opinion.

Thx

Bulldozer is 3 months away.

The Sandy bridge series brings better performance than current Phenom 2 for the same price.

I'd hold out on your PC, or just get a sandy bridge now, with 8800gt, then grab a 6950 when you can afford it.

You could get the new videocard now, and use it in your new build later. I would not advice to get a Phenom II right now, but instead wait for the new AMD CPU's to release in june and compare them to the socket 1155 Sandy Bridge CPU's.

no matter what, i couldn't get my E6600 to keep up with my GTX470 even @3.6GHz, and 6950 is way faster.......but you will get better gaming performance overall with the 6950 , so you can pick it up, and then save up and get Bulldozer later

That E6600 will never push a 6950 fully. I used to run one @ 3.55Ghz. Hell, my E8400 @ 4.185 can't push my GTX560 like my Quad @ 3.2Ghz.

I vote for a CPU/Mobo/RAM upgrade. If possible, get the GPU now and upgrade the rest really soon after. I guess it depends on the games you play though. Seems like most I play are very CPU intensive though.

I like the input thus far. So if I'm reading your responses correctly, the Sandy Bridge will be comparable to the Bulldozer, or will the new AMD be above the current 1155's?

I think I will go ahead with the GPU for now and wait for the Bulldozer, then make my decision on a CPU. Any speculations on how the Sandy Bridge will compare to the Bulldozer? I did some research on newegg just now, the i5 and i7 both look like a good route for a CPU upgrade.

Here's an idea for a CPU/Mobo/RAM combo I just put together.

ASUS SABERTOOTH P67
Intel Core i5-2500K Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz
Kingston HyperX 4GB DDR3 1800

Thx
