X4 640 System

Hey guys! I have a AMD X4 640 (Propus) based system sitting here and I'd like to start playing a few games on it, but I'm curious if the CPU can keep up.

Here are my specs:

MSI 890FXA-GD65
AMD Athlon II X4 640
Sapphire HD6950 unlocked to 6970
4GB ADATA Gamer DDR3 1600MHz
Antec 650W PSU

Most people would say that the 640 is too slow to use in a gaming machine, but what do you think? Should I upgrade to a 955 BE or a 1090T? This 640 can run at 3.5GHz on stock voltages 24/7, so can it keep up OC'd?

EDIT: I know most would say to use the siq rig, and I do for most of my gaming...but this machine is hooked up to my LCD in the living room and it would be nice to game a little on the big screen.

There's no need to upgrade the CPU in my own subjective book. The reason is the gains would be marginal, at best ~5% in only a few titles that really love a big cache. The lower amount of cache can be mitigated by using higher speed memory and/or tight timings. Anyway, if you use high enough details in games, the processor won't matter at all as the GPU would become the limiting part.

Thanks! That's what I thought. Most people right now think that if you aren't running an Intel system, you can't do anything but browse the net. I love my Intel rigs, but this thing should handle gaming just fine.

I could always drop it down to 720P, but I'd prefer to leave it at 1080P for most games.

It will do more than fine on games. I run pretty much all of my games maxed out on my machine.

Edit: Well when I had my 5770 that is.

I'm glad to hear that. I wouldn't mind upgrading this CPU since I feel like its the weakest link, but if I don't need to then I can wait. I went back and forth when I bought this chip between the 1090T, 955BE, and the X4 640...in the end I went with the 640 because I ended up purchasing the HD6950 and a SSD drive. As much as I like the rig, there's still that "what if" factor.
