GTX 460 sli or single GTX 570 for high res?

Thread Starter
Like the title says, I'm trying to decide between two 1GB GTX 460s SLI or a single GTX 570. I'm running my current monitor at 1920*1080, and if I upgrade (my monitor) that resolution will only go up.

Which would give the most benefits for the resolution? I also normally lean towards single gpu setups, less heat and less complexity, but there are some decent deals on two cards out there.

Another option would be to save some money and snag just a GTX 560. How would this fare vs the other two?

Power supply not an issue, I'm upgrading that shortly as well, so I can upgrade based on my need after I've got a video card lined up.

Honestly, I just went through this, and it is not worth it to have two mid range video cards in sli/cfx. Because once you turn up the settings to take advantage of those cards, the memory buffer runs out and your fps plummets. It is a much better idea to get the fastest single gpu you can afford, and sli later if you need it.

Take it from someone who knows, and get the 570. I would suggest the asus directcu II, best 570 out there and has no problems with high overclocks like reference 570's.

Two 460s will beat a single 580, so yeah, get the 460s.

Why not a Radeon HD 6950 2GB ? Save a litte money and add a second one later.

That should be pretty decent for high resolutions, considered the amount of VRAM. They can even be unlocked. Well, presumably...

For the price two 460s are the better buy, the 6950 is worth it if he can get two.

Dual 460s at 900mhz are little monsters.
570's kick butt & take names at 1920 X 1200 ----> 2650 X 1600.
Forget even mentioning the GTX 580, the 6970 matches the GTX 570 at 1600P.

They (570's) are excellent performers at these resolutions and with 1280MB VRAM and a 320bit bus they run AA/AF and MSAA efficiently as well. They overclock well but if you touch the voltage have adequate cooling to keep it stable and reliable.

GTX 460's scale very well but 1024MB ram is already starting to be a limitation for high resolution gaming with advanced textures. Personally, I feel my 1280MB is just enough for me and I only game at 1080P.

The Radeons are a little cheaper and the driver set isn't nearly as good overall/doesn't offer as many features but if you want to save money AMD is a good option.
2GB VRAM is useless until exceeding 1600P type resolutions but its nice to have for the future or large resolution setups now.

i recommend the 570. it has more vram, and just 1 will play most games maxed out at your resolution (not including crysis 1 or 2, or metro 2033).

later on, you can always add a second one if you still need more power.

if you plan on overclocking this gpu, please be careful as several users on this forum have bricked their 570's. make sure to read up on it.

Even at 700MHz the 460s smack the 580 down.

GTX 570 Direct Cu II here and *cough* Crysis 2 like butter @ 16aa 1080p

Not so sure about Crysis 1. And for metro 2033 it's not even concidered as a game, it's more of an achievement.
