[Ars] How publishers punish us for buying new games - Page 2

Lol...this is so true. I have noticed a lot of movies now that you can't skip past the previews anymore, you have to fast forward. Pretty soon, there will not be a skip or fast forward button on the remotes anymore.

Of course you want updates, just day 1 updates kinda suck... but updates are good!

Good op piece, fully agree. Although I must admit I have never seen a preview trailer for a game forced upon me...but then again, the most recent PC games I've played are Starcraft II and Arkham Asylum, so maybe I'm just missing out on the fun so far.

I've had Netflix movies that, once I skipped past all the trailers and crap and finally got to the "loading" icon, that took upwards of 10 minutes just to get to the menu from that point! (I'm looking at you, Kick-Ass! I thought I had a broken disc!)

Even if they don't rush it, many games require an early patch. The reason is two fold.

First, games are extremely complex. A testing team would need months to mostly test a game. Even then, there is no easy/cheap way to test a game near the scale of production. (i.e. Running with a few hundred players vs ten thousand players.) A friend of mine does infrastructure for online Flash-based games. He can simulate a few thousand users but workload is not the same when it goes live.

Furthermore, games go gold 1-2 months before release. Basically, the release code is locked down for printing. During this time, testers have more time to do their work. However, developers cannot change the code even if additional bugs are found.
^^^ This.

There are thousands of combinations of hardware out there, and once millions of people get a hold of your software they're bound to find something that 70 testers didn't.

Maybe Ars would rather companies not patch their games? Have fun with that one Ars.

Another reason why I stopped buying DVDs and Blu-ray and just stick to Netflix.

I don't care about patches as long as they are not forced(Remember SPORE?, patches made it unplayable)
I don't care about install time, it runs faster on the HDD anyway, I'd rather wait now than later, but launch day DLC and unlock codes, those do piss me off.
Things were much worse BEFORE patches were easily available, would you rather wait a minute or two or have to avoid part of a game because it just doesn't work.

Well, if the stupid game didn't have those bugs in the first place, we wouldn't need to download anything.

I totally concur. When the very first DVD movies came out, you could skip and watch the trailers in the menu if you wanted to. But later on, I think the publishers just want to have that same marketing like on the VHS and kinda locked them trailers and other crap.

I agree partly with all the adds that can’t be fast forwarded, but you usually can delete them. In terms of loading games and patches well that is just the current time in which we play. I too remember the simple days of dropping Super Mario World into my SNES and just playing for hours. But as many have said before, games are so much more complicated now.
