Q8400 + CoolMaster 212+ ... 4GHz?

Thread Starter
I am currently only able to achieve 3.33GHz successfully with overclocking my sig rig and having it boot up. I am still relatively new to overclocking, but I did manage to OC through BIOS. Is there any way I can take my Q8400 to 4GHz with my CoolMaster 212+? I can post screenshots of my BIOS if that helps get to the bottom of it.

Thanks

Might just be because I haven't really looked into the capabilities of the chip, but I'm pretty sure it'd be really difficult/impossible to get that chip up to 4ghz unless your chip is golden.

You'd have to crank the voltage up quite a bit, and it might produce a little too much for the 212+ to handle. Plus, your chip might not be able to get that high. It would be worth seeing how fast you can go, little by little, until you start hitting temps which you are uncomfortable with.

Ah, OK. Yeah, I hear the Q8400 chipsets aren't the best for overclocking. I will stick with 3.33GHz and I am running the cores at 45C during most times so I am more than happy with that. For a $30 CPU cooler, the CoolMaster 212+ justifies the extra 670Mhz IMO.

It's a bit disappointing, but 3.33 GHz is still doing pretty good. And yeah, the motherboard is a bit of a limiting factor (I have the same one). It didn't played nicely with me when I overclocked my E8400

Not with that motherboard.

Probably one of the better motherboards for it. I got 3.6 easy with the same board and a Q8300. Could boot to 3.8 but the rig was for a family member so didn't pursue it further than 3.6. It would have taken alot of work to stabilize I think.

Large FFTs on UD3L:

LargeFFT6hr.jpg

I would still be surprised to see 4.0 though with an 8xxx
