Wasn't there already tests done with x4/x8/x16 single card and crossfire/SLI in games?

I thought I read an article about it very recently, from either HardOCP or Tom's.

Either way, I was curious about all this bandwidth issues myself. I might just plug my card into the x1 slot on my motherboard and see what happens. xD

Think of it this way. You have four cars driving side by side on a highway. Two are going north, two are going south. The highway has six lanes with three lanes going each direction. Having the third lane available isn't going to help those four cars go any faster. However, having that extra third lane is going to help as traffic increases.

This methodology is kinda suspect. I remember switching from my 920 D0 X58 setup @ 4.55Ghz 16x/16x with two 6970s and transplanting them into a P67 2600K @ 4.55Ghz 8x/8x for an apple to apples gaming comparison. In games I lost 2-5% across the board just going from 16x to 8x. Not to mention the 2600k clock for clock is suppose to be faster in gaming. I was kinda bummed by how much performance I lost switching to P67! I could only imagine what going to 4x slots would do. These tests were done at a very high resolution though.

Yeah, but could you actually see/feel the 2-5% difference? Or did you only find out after running a benchmark program?

I don't see how someone could see a 2-5% difference. Even if you were getting 100fps, thats only 95 to 98fps as opposed to 100. Hardly noticeable.

It was not about if I "felt" the difference. It was simply about reporting the FRAPS data. Whether it was noticeable or not is irrelevant. No one likes to lose performance switching to a "new" platform, even if it is only a small amount.

Interesting. The other reviews people have been posting from [H] and Tom's showed <1 - 2fps difference between x16/x16 and x8/x8. Not sure what was causing those problems with P67.

Benchmarks are not efficient ways to test how a video card will perform during actual gaming. I've seen people get high scores in benches and their video card runs like crap in certain games. Their OC is fine during 3dVantage and crashes during actual gaming.
