You probably have to pay for the manpower, as well as insurance costs, and fuel. Strapping and then removing a 75-ton brick to the back of a 747 is not an easy or cheap task.

The space shuttle operations consume $4-5 billion annually of NASA's appropriation. The "shipping" tab likely covers maintenance costs incurred, as well as being intended to cover the tab necessary to decomission the SCAs.

A normal commercial 747 costs ~$50,000 each way to fly across the Atlantic to the airline in gas alone....and that is before all the maintenance, insurance, licensing, flight crew, ground crew etc costs. Odds are moving the shuttle ruins the already pitiful fuel economy a commercial 747 gets.

Odds are NASA is trying to collect some spare coin out of the deal to cover costs. But flying any aircraft is tremendously expensive. There's a reason most US airlines do not actually own their aircraft....it is also why airlines have been in trouble financially for some time.

Then why don't they start making electric planes? What, there isn't a battery with enough capacity yet.. or is it the fuel companies that won't 'let' this happen?

NASA should be getting away with taking money from private museums and organizations.. unless they are government owned. And then, it's just one part of the government telling another part to pay up and sending Uncle Sam the bill..

Who knows what all that bill is being used to cover. Odds are NASA is handling the delivery from their facilities all the way to the museum doorstep/exhibit, since NASA has all the experience moving the critters. Which probably amounts to thousands of man-hours in total.

NASA is also probably spending a pretty penny pulling all the valuable/usable hardware out of the shuttles. There's lots of stuff in those vehicles you don't want sitting in a museum for safety as well as other reasons. I.e. the explosives used to blow off the landing gear doors in emergencies. Heck, with how much wiring is in a space shuttle you could easily net yourself the cost of the jet fuel to fly it on the 747 by reclaiming/recycling the cable trunks.
