BSODs, Various issues, won't even boot... - Page 3

Ok so I cleared CMOS and now started testing my RAM with memtest. Unfortunately I didn't have much time to complete it all last night so only did 2 sticks for far.

Stick 1 - 7 full passes on standard tests, duration approximately 2 hours 30 mins, Pass OK
Stick 2 - 3 full passes on standard tests, duration just over 1 hour, Pass OK

Additionally since I reset CMOS, I've not had any hiccups (bar one, detailed next) with starting the PC and successfully loaded Windows 7 to desktop 4 times. Immediately after resetting CMOS, when I started up the PC the power came on, then 2 seconds later it restarted itself like I described in the original post. However since then nothing else bad has happened, and I've booted windows 4 times, loaded BIOS at least 7 times, and ran memtest 4 times (first to check it was working, second to actually test all 8GB of ram which I'll explain below and the other two times for stick 1 and 2).

OK so the strange thing I noticed. I mentioned in the first post how Windows had been reserving half my ram for hardware for no apparent reason. After resetting CMOS, my BIOS only recognises less then half my ram with the full 8GB installed. When I ran memtest like that, it recognised all the dimms but it was only able to test half of it from what I could see. One of the values on the memtest screen is 'cached' and it had half my ram there. Wonder if anyone could shed some light?

I'll update as soon as I finish testing my ram, after which I'll do more extensive reboot testing and try to run some games.

Edit: FYI, memory remapping is on in BIOS.

Have you set the ram at the right voltage in bios?

Yup, RAM was set with correct voltage via XMP. 1.65V.

Try and update your BIOS version and do the testing again with all the 8 GB of RAM.

OK guys, I identified one problem. One of the sticks of RAM is faulty. I couldn't get the computer to POST with this one stick, but the other three boot fine and pass memtest.

However, I'm now still having this issue with the BIOS only recognising half my RAM (now with 4GB installed, it only sees 2GB). Windows sees all 4GB but has 2083MB reserved for hardware. CPU-Z also sees all 4GB but it says it's running in single channel mode. If you recall, I mentioned in the original post that I added 4GB to the system later on. The 4GB I'm testing with now is a matching pair that were bought together.

I'm going to check the BIOS version now.

This is driving me bonkers. I swapped the two sticks of RAM into one channel and now it recognizes all 4GB in BIOS, but its running in single channel mode obviously.

As far as I can tell my BIOS is up to date. And bearing in mind, it ran two of these sticks of memory in dual channel for months, I'm really lost here :/

Update:Weird. It was my belief that as my cpu only supports dual channel, putting 6GB in would = single channel, and that's why I went from 4GB to 8GB. However upon reading my motherboard's memory chart in the manual, it said it could run 6GB in dual channel. So I put the other working stick into the second channel and now I've got 6GB dual channel. I'll run memtest over night but I'm really confused about why 4GB dual channel didn't when it did before.

Is this memory on the motherboards compatible memory chart? I've had builds where no matter what some memory will not work with some boards. Hence why most manufacturers put out memory compatibility lists.

Yeah the memory is on the chart, but it's on the chart for the 4GB kit and 6GB kit. Corsair sells the 6GB kit as i7 triple channel RAM while the 4GB is sold as i5 dual channel, hence I thought I couldn't use 6GB. But according to the chart, I could run 6GB in dual channel...

Passed 7 hours in memtest so I guess I'm ok, and no blue screens or crashing since I cleared CMOS and took out the faulty stick. Thanks for the help guys.
